Muscle Up Training Progression

January 21st, 2012 · 3 Comments

We all have 2012 goals right?

I did not write any resolutions, just goals I’d like to achieve relatively soon.  At our local CrossFit box, there are 200+ people participating in a 2012 Get Fit Challenge.  This is a really great way to kick start the new year amongst friends and have our friends be our accountability partners!  Our coaches also sat down with us each individually to rewrite/tweak our goals.    Technically, we have until February 11 and that is NOT that far away, Yikes!
For those of you who don’t know, I’ve been crossfitting for more than two years. I have 100 pound Snatch {that is an Olympic Lift), lots and lots of strength that I’ve worked hard to increase and my cardio strength as never really gone away….However, there is one thing that I don’t have yet and that is a Muscle Up. The Muscle Up is essentially a pull up on rings from a standing position into the deepest ring dip ever.

Why is this so hard?

I don’t know anymore, the one thing I know is that I have not consistently trained for a muscle up in the last two years.   I’ll work on it for a while, then, move on to something else.  Now, is my chance to really focus on just this one thing with tons of witnesses!!

This is the best progression I’ve found on the internet to date. It’s well explained, simple and easy to follow. So, as of this writing, I’ll follow this one. Mainly because it’s based on strength alone. My coach has been working with me on the kipping muscle up as well….between the strength from the strict and the momentum from the kipping one, God Willing, I’ll have one in one month.

Wish me luck!

Product Review: Yoga Earth

July 7th, 2011 · No Comments

So I had a chance to try out YogaEarth’s pre-practice and post-post practice supplements called Balance, and Vitality. Both the powders mixed up easily with my blender ball cup and were not gritty or thick. The pre-exercise supplement Balance was fruity and tasted the good. The post-exercise Vitality was more of a green mixture, which I’m ok with, but might take some people getting used to. Since I work out in the morning it was tough for me to take the Balance 90 minutes before physical activity as the directions said. Most of the time I took it 45-60 minutes before exercise. Both the supplements have great things in them like antioxidants and probiotics. It is a proprietary blend so you don’t really know how much of these great things you’re getting, but the ingredients list is impressive. That being said I didn’t notice a difference while taking these supplements. That is not to say they were not doing something good for me, but it did not affect my performance. Maybe it is more suited to yoga than to the shorter, higher intensity crossfit workout. Oh, and if I did purchase this produce I would not use the single serving packets. It’s more ‘green’ to pack up my own-don’t you think?

Book Review: Unbroken

May 31st, 2011 · No Comments

Note: This post has nothing to do with health or fitness, so, if you’d like to skip it, please feel free!

In one word to describe this book: awesome. But, that is cheesy, so here are a few more: Depressing, Inspiring, Amazing, and Heart Breaking.

From the first chapter, I was hooked. The story follows the life of Louie Zamperini. Louie begins his life as a real terror of a kid! Eventually, he finds happiness in running and competes in the 1936 Olympic Games. Following the Olympics, WW II begins. Louie becomes a bomber in the B-24 and Hillenbrand takes you from his first moments of life to the very end of his life. I highly recommend this book to any of you, it’s fantastic!

Muscle Recovery!

To be used for any and all aches and pains in your muscles! Much firmer than the Yoga Therapy balls or a tennis ball. You can even tape two together for even more pain and excitement. These will work great on a tight Piriformis, shoulders, hips, back, shoulders, knees or calves…

The Lacrosse Balls were recommended to us by our trainers and now I can highly recommend them, although, it’s much more painful than I like!

What do you use to recover from big muscle aches?
