I’ve written on this subject many times, but, it never hurts to go over it again. Anybody see the results of the Olympic Trials this weekend in the marathon? There are many women who competed in the marathon that were over 30 and there was one still competing at age 50! Wow. Especially with women and marathons, I’ve noticed that age really doesn’t matter that much…then, you can look at the women who competed in the games {The CrossFit Games} last year who were closer to 40 and mothers, more than 1, I can tell you.

Lately, I’ve been known to say, “Yeah, and I’m 40.” and the answer from whomever I speak this to, should be, “Yeah, so.” If you want something bad enough, you put the time and effort in, you clean up your diet (that includes the good stuff like wine and chocolate), you sleep right, then just maybe you’ll earn you’re right to be where ever you want to be.

Cheers to a new year, new you!

HOT DAMN!! For an old girl, like myself, ripe old age of 40, I’m tied for 9th place out of 105 women in our local Next Level Invitational Series!! Next week, is the last one, and at least now I’m motivated to show up and compete!
Edited to add that I finished 11th for the series with a new Hang Snatch PR and a fun time riding the Watt Bikes as well as returning to my old ways of running long distances to start my day. It’s coming full circle. So, what’s next for me?

Recently, I blogged, that I was on the fence about competing in the Next Level Invitational as I has a very hard time at the last one. It is still a costly, time away from the family event, but, I must be slightly crazy because I am training for it. Just last week, it was announced that Watt Bikes would be part of our next event, and that was ONE very cool light at the end of the tunnel for me, because I actually have experience with bike riding and happen to enjoy cycling. Not, that I am or was a pro at cycling or anything, but I do have significant cycling experience!! I was actually overjoyed when I was given this news!!

I won’t go into all my cycling history, but, lets just say that I have been cycling as long as I have been running and that time span is longer than 10 years!! It also makes me old (for a woman competitor) competing against girls half my age, but, because of my experience, I feel blessed with having years of competition under my belt. I mean, why should I at age 40, roll over and wait to get fat and old?! It’s a given, as we age, unless we drastically change our diets, will naturally gain weight. I can almost guarantee that I will still be competing in something when I’m 50 and hopefully even into the 60′s!! It keeps me YOUNG.

What about you, reader, what will you be doing when you’re 40, 50 or 60?! Will you be kicking a** and taking names like in a local 5km race, triathlon or a crossfit competition?! There is no time like the present to find something you love, and go do it.

Currently, I am on the fence as to whether to compete or not in the Next Level Invitational coming up in November. Just two weeks ago, both my husband and I had the opportunity to compete together on the same day in the same crossfit competition, spend the day together and have two nights without our kids–all for the sake of competing.

Rewind a bit on the last NLI competition:

Good- hanging with hubby all day, hanging with my CDR friends all day, competing <del datetime="2011-09-26T02:35:11+00:00">{although not all that fun}</del>, finishing at 15th with little to no sleep competing against girls half my age…
bad- rain, hail, lightning causing the events to be changed
ugly- my attitude can be in the toilet sometimes when it comes to big changes, lack of sleep, lack of confidence, negative thoughts running through my head, blah blah blah.

The Next Competition comes up on November 12th and I’m on the fence as to commit or not.

Anybody, want to chime in their opinion?
What it means between now and then is an even bigger time commitment for working out- possibly 1-2 days of double workouts, extra sleep, extra stress, time away from the kids, and an overall lack of motivation to be a good mommy when I should be XYZ (insert selfish thing like Epsom salt baths, recovery stretching, cooking and eating).
If I commit to it, I could potentially train for a top ten spot, zero prize money and a nice post-event party. What could I gain? Valuable competition experience that could come in handy if I were to be on another Regional Team. Strength and experience and an opportunity to improve my skills. Improve my overall ability to adapt and excel in any situation.

Side Note: When I was twenty I worked as a waitress in a hotel in Dallas. For some unknown reason, there was a plane delay that dropped 50+ people into our restaurant at 10 o’clock at night. All of the other waiters made them self scarce and left me to wait on all these people. I could have freaked out like they did and gone home, but, I didn’t. I stayed and ended up earning $100+ in tips and had a great time!! It’s all about the attitude.

Yes, even with this post, I’m still on the fence. If I were to be honest, maybe my lack of motivation is fear that I’ll stink it up!

Thoughts, comments or suggestions?

This past weekend was my third ever crossfit invitational (!). However, as you can see by the exclamation point, I wasn’t all that enthused about it going into it. School has just started back up and I’ve worked my butt off the last three weeks getting all my ducks in a row, so to speak and haven’t had the time to dedicate to my training as I’d like. In addition to that, my sleep stank all last week!! Yes, I am making excuses, to make the point that my MENTAL Game and preparation leading into this event was not at all what I’d like.

The day started at 4:45AM with an arrival time at the event of 7AM. Immediately following our arrival, we experienced rain, hail, thunder and lightning! This is not a normal thing for Southern California and this caused a serious mess with the event logistics. 1.5 hours after the original start of the event, we started with three completely different workouts. These new workouts were designed with the intent that they could all be done rain or shine–basically, all bodyweight/gymnastics movements. Not my strengths of course, but, not sure what is anyway!

Event 1: As many rounds as possible of Double Unders and Burpees in 10 minutes! My quads were screaming within the first 2 minutes, and I knew I was going to battle the entire time.

Event 2: As many Deadlifts as possible of 135 (Intermediate Women) in 4 minutes. Probably was my best event even though it came at 4:30PM. It was the first time during the day, that I could actually hear myself talking to myself to NOT LET GO OF THE BAR.

Event 3: 10 Pull-ups and 10 Air Squats as many rounds as possible in 7 minutes! It was a long seven minutes and even though I was getting a good number of consistent pullups in a row, I was still not inside my own head and lacked mental focus.

What was the best part of all this? It was hanging with my hubby, who was participating in his first ever Masters Crossfit competition and who did fairly well — as well as the hanging out all day with my CrossFit CDR family. My best buddy, Penny, won her Master’s Competition, as well!! In the end, my results were decent, however, I’d really like to Improve my mental focus, my ability to stay positive through all kinds of adversity and remain focused on the task at hand!

“Excellence is not a skill. It’s an attitude.” Ralph Marston

2 days and counting before my second CrossFit Invitational.

Here are two of the events:

Event 1 – “Triple Double”

For reps:

AMRAP in 2 minutes of CTB Pullups (Males), Chin over horizontal plane (Females)

Rest 2 min

AMRAP in 2 minutes of: Ground to Shoulder (#135/#95)

Rest 2 min

AMRAP in 2 min of: Box Jumps (24”, 20”)

Event #2 “Zipadeedodah”

10 min cutoff: for time or reps achieved. Out of 146 total.

For time:

15 Backsquat from the Rack (#155, #95)

followed by

2 rounds of:

6 pullovers

12 burpees

40 doubleunders

followed by

15 Deadlifts (#155, #95)

As I sit here and ponder the above, I ask myself why am I doing this again?! The main reason I believe is that I am a competitor. I like to test myself against other girls half my age with no kids and see how I measure up, hahahah… All I can say is that I like it. The thought of doing a simple 5km sounds boring to me at the moment.

Anyways…on being versatile. In the events above there are two movements that we have NEVER done. The main one being the “pullover” and the second one being the one armed kettlebell swing. A pullover is simply sending your legs over the bar. (Here is a fairly ungraceful version of it on youtube.) This reminds me of the main purpose of crossfit–that is having the strength to do a wide variety of things that you may never do in a regular workout. Having the right attitude to just attempt things you’d never do otherwise. To be strong enough to try. Or having the humility to get out there and just do it.

And, it’s not just me competing from our local CrossFit box. We have 12 competitors going!! 4 girls (1 master), 1 master man, and lots of intermediate and advanced men. Good luck to everybody and thanks for your support!

You can follow the action on Twitter starting at 6am Saturday.

The New York Times recently ran an article about Kara Goucher and Paula Radcliffe who are both professional marathon runners who are now also pregnant and still training hard!

Hooray for them!

I know all of you mother’s who were runners before pregnancy have a story to tell on this subject. For me, during my first pregnancy, I was told I Could Not Run!?!?!?! Seriously? I was in my 1st trimester, feeling great, and all of a sudden- WHAM- No running. I had had no side effects & no pains whatsoever! And running was my means of exercise. Overnight (it seemed) I’d gained 20 pounds! Long story short, we invested in a treadmill, and I spent the rest of my pregnancy reading and walking on it for hours!

How many of you ran through your pregnancies? Times are changing and I think that if you’re body is used to a certain kind of exercise that you should be able to keep doing it when you are pregnant!

Thoughts on this?
