Spring 2011: Swimwear for Athletes

May 2nd, 2011 · 2 Comments

Every year, about this time, I go hunting for a new suit. And, I’ll admit that I am a creature of habit, I know which brands work for me, and I very rarely deviate. What I hate more than anything is buying a suit at a local store and after a few wearings, the bottoms creep up!  Which leads me to constantly turn to short or skirt bottoms so this problem doesn’t occur.  I’m also moving around with my boys all the time, so, skimpy little suits that are designed for sun bathing only do not work for moms on the go!

My three big favs have always been Athleta, Title Nine or Lole women.

I would love to hear what you all think?!  And, what works best for you? Anybody loyal  to other brands?

Adventures in Active Vacations for Kids!

March 21st, 2011 · 1 Comment

Yes, we are on vacation again.  The beauty of being a school teacher and I’ve decided that spring break is the best vacation ever! Why? Because there are no holidays surrounding it which means no stress to buy gifts, cook extra dishes, or host family members!  So, we’re off an yet another adventure today, we’ve spent the last 3 days hiking the hills in our area and having a blast!

But, first, my protein pancake has to kick off this photo post!

6 egg whites, 1 scoop protein powder, 1/2 cup blueberries topped with 100% maple syrup!  Delicious!

Indiana Jones impersonator!

This green whip cream made his day!

Big hill climb hike with rain threatening, but we had a blast!

“Narnian Soldiers” fighting with foam swords!

And, we’re off and yet another one today!

What do you do with your kids for active day trip vacations??

Fit Mom’s News!

March 17th, 2011 · 1 Comment

CrossFit CDR is competing as a team for the SoCal Sectional Finals!! And, yours truly is on the team.   This is right up my alley~~ a little competition right here in my town.   Will still be a mommy the other 23  hours of the day.  There are ten of us from Redlands competing.  What the heck is the So Cal Sectional Finals?! Basically, people from all around the world are competing at their own affiliate boxes for a spot in the finals via video.    The competition goes for six weeks and the workout is posted on CrossFit’s main site every Tuesday at 5pm.  We have five days to complete the workout.  Tomorrow, is workout one.  Wish us luck.  Power Snatches and Double Unders for ten minutes!!

Secondly, the Redlands Bicycle Classic is coming up in two weeks and we are hosting a men’s cycling team!!  We are huge supporters of the classic and have hosted a team in the past.  This will be our first year hosting a men’s team and my house will swell to seven people, multiple bikes, tons of gear and TONS of food!! Should be exciting to say the least!

More news soon!

Why I Love Barbells!

March 7th, 2011 · 2 Comments

Barbells have changed my life.  They require YOUR entire body to be active in one lift.  You must have proper positioning and depth for the lift to count.  It’s taken me over a year to get comfortable with an overhead squat {depth here is just shy of “below parallel”} and I love the I can always improve my strength!

You, as a woman, if you are reading this, can add barbell training at your local gym!  I’d start with the Press.  Learn it, master it, then move on to Push Press.  You can reference crossfit demos easily and teach yourself.  Volume is less important than correct form.  You can start with just 8 or 10 pound dumbbells in small sets of 3.  We typically will do 5-7 sets of 3 moving as much weight as we are able for the set of 3.

You want ripped shoulder muscles?! Presses is a great place to start!

How many of you weight train and how many of you use free weights or barbells?

Sick Days…

February 28th, 2011 · No Comments

Do you workout when you’re sick?

If it’s just a sinus infection, yes or no?

I’m going on Day 10 of extended illness that started with RSV Virus and has now morphed into sinus headaches, blah blah …..

Will you or won’t you go workout when sick? I can do certain types of weight training when sick, but, I sure as heck can’t run or do any cardio…Rest is best, right?

Goal Setting using the S.M.A.R.T. Technique

February 17th, 2011 · No Comments

This post was inspired by MizFit who gave me the idea to blog about my goals for 2011. And, I should add that hers are mine as well {Stretch more, foam roll daily, actually get to a yoga class}..I have so many goals! This is also my year…the year I turn 40 and I’d like to be in the best shape of my life. Using the S. (specific), M. (measurable), A. (attainable), R. (realistic), and T. (Time based), I should be able to narrow my focus down to small chunks of attainable goals.

S. (specific)
1. To increase my overall strength by 15%.
2. Be able to complete “Diane” perscribed by the end of the year. This requires 45 Handstand Push-ups with my head touching the floor each time.
3. To complete one muscle up.

M. (measurable)
I will be able to see results in actual weight moved…For example to start with five pound PR’s in every max-out we do.

A. (Attainable)
To expect as little as a five pound PR in each lift- that’s done less than once a month is attainable.

R. It is realistic.

T. Time based. By the end of 2011, I should be able to track my strength gains by watching for improvements throughout the year.

What are your goals for 2011?
