Top 9th Post

November 26th, 2013 · 1 Comment

Welcome to the top 10 posts of all time on Fitness for Mommies!

This is the 9th favorite post, originally posted on May 10, 2012.

To know me in person is to know that I literally wear workout clothes 5 days a week.  I start my day off in crops and tank tops and finish it in shorts and tank tops usually with a workout squeezed in somewhere…On weekends, I’m left with one solitary pair of jeans that fit my humungous quads and a sports bra and tank top because I’m boring that way.  However, it’s hot here in Southern California now and I need some dresses.

Like, by tomorrow morning, when my six year old serves me coffee and eggs for the Mother’s Day tea.  He told me I need to wear a dress!  I’m not a dress girl!! I look silly in dresses, my arms are huge, my legs are huge…. I don’t carry off the usual feminine dresses very well.

There are some brands that are now creating dresses for the athletic type body, thank you, Shabby Apple, but, they are still super frilly dresses!  I found a few that are possibilities by Horny Toad or Isis or Lole.

Anybody have any other suggestions for “go to ” dresses for this athletic mom?!

Perfect Little Stocking Stuffer: Be Active Tea

December 20th, 2012 · No Comments

Only recently have I learned to love tea. For those of you who know me personally, know that I drink a ton of coffee and that I like my coffee black with coconut milk in it daily. However, I’ve found that by 4pm, I no longer want coffee, but, I’m not interested in drinking plain water either, so, tea has been my alternative, decaf, of course. No sugar or honey required, simply a hot soothing beverage at the end of the day really helps me unwind and relax.

Although finding teas you like is a whole different story!! Raise your hand if you have a favorite you drink daily? I’ve tried all kinds of teas from black to green to fruit to Rooibos tea. Lately, I’ve been enjoying Sleepytime tea from our local grocery store, but, I’m open to trying all brands of tea.

The Republic of Tea wrote to me recently wrote to me regarding their new line of Be Active Teas and asked if I was interested in trying them! Immediately, it was a yes, not only were they decaf teas, but, they are designed for athletes! So far, I’ve only had a chance to try the Recovery Tea which is made with hints of caramel and coconut which I thoroughly enjoyed! They also have teas for endurance, metabolism, hydration and flexibility!

For athletes, moms and active seniors, I think the gift of tea is a wonderful idea! To learn more about the Republic of Tea company, click here.

FTC- for purpose of review, I received one of each of the above mentioned teas and the opinions expressed here are my own.

Best Ever Swimwear for Women Athletes: NAYAD

December 10th, 2012 · No Comments

I have recently had the pleasure of testing out Nayad’s swimwear and I am in love. Not only are these pieces designed by women athletes, they are designed for us to be outside doing athletic things in them! NAYAD Made for Movement Swimwear can be personally designed by you! You can choose from 4 different styles of Bra Tops and at least 4 different styles of bottoms and then choose the colors you like. I chose the longer short bottom and the cross back sports bra top and they are perfect! It would be highly unlikely to run into another woman on the beach in the same suit as you! In comparison to other suits I own, this one fits snugly yet, still not revealing, and I can do more in it–such as handstands, sprinting or even lifting it I wanted! These suits will work great from the gym straight to the beach or surfboard!

To learn more about NAYAD swimwear, please click over here! Show your love by “liking” their Facebook page.

FTC- Much thanks to Kate Fox for giving me the opportunity to review your wonderful product! I love it! A NAYAD swimsuit was provided to me for purposes of review and the above opinions are my own.

How I plan to maintain my weight during the holidays

December 9th, 2012 · 2 Comments

How much weight do most Americans gain during the holiday season?

Is it ten pounds??

From Thanksgiving to New Years most people enjoy their holiday festivities to the point that they end up heavier on the other side of the holiday than before, especially when you have multiple friend and family gatherings throughout each week for six weeks straight! The opportunities to over-eat are abundant and the opportunities to exercise might become infrequent if the social life demands it.

So, I plan to manage the holiday NOT weight gain as follows! Feel free to offer suggestions or comments on my plan.

Yes, I love sugar as much as the next person, however, I have learned how to keep it under control…

Eat dark chocolate only when you crave it!

1. If at a party, chose the foods that are the cleanest (veggies, fruits, and proteins).
2. Skip the chips and dips in favor of a cocktail, water or tea.
3. Eat desert that will be the best thing you ever tasted rather than something that is just “good.”
4. Maintain your exercise routines to the best of your ability. Lift heavy weights, walk frequently and sprint or do high interval training 1-2x per week.
5. Enjoy the people rather than the food!
6. If eating out due to lack of time at home to prepare home cooked meals, eat a salad with protein!

Skip the bread, etc…It’s nothing but calories.

7. Get good sleep, drink green tea, take your fish oil and generally enjoy life!

What do you think? Will I come out ahead or behind this holiday season with these rules/tips?

Inexpensive Gifts for Mom Athletes

December 5th, 2012 · No Comments

This post is inspired by one of my mom friends who was telling us what she wanted for Christmas!  This post is written with the husband and family members in mind who don’t want to spend a lot, but, would like to get gifts that we would want!

1.  Long, colorful knee socks!  Seriously.  I prefer Reebok socks but there are lots of brands out there, the more colorful the better!

2. Slipless headbands, Lululemon. Or colorful wide ones by Prana. I like both!

3. Cookbooks & Apps. Well Fed by Melissa J and Nom Nom Paleo are both great and fun to use and read.

4. iTunes GiftCards. There is nothing better than a fantastic playlist to get a girl going! And, it’s super easy to drop $20 in five minutes or less on iTunes. My newest favorites are Switchfoot, Glee soundtrack, Daughtry, and Lifehouse.

5. Notebook, journal booklet to help keep track of your lifting statistics. Or make one. This is something I struggle with– just keeping everything organized. What lift you did on a certain day, how many reps and sets, etc…Wodbooks make some, but, I’m still looking for easier ways to keep track of my numbers! Ideas on this one are welcome!

6. Food. Paleo Snacks- Macademia Nuts, Primal Pacs, High Quality Jerk…Yum!

7. Scarves!

8. Alosport Cotton T-shirts are my absolute favorite shirt to wear on the weekends!

That’s all I can think of at the moment! Anybody want to add anything?

Happy Birthday, Lucy!

November 3rd, 2012 · 1 Comment

2008 was the first time I’d heard of Lucy Activewear.  I fell in love with it then, and I still love it now.  I recently got to visit an actual Lucy store during the CAF triathlon and as I walked through the store, I was admiring all the really soft cotton shirts, the textures of the running clothes and the styles of the yoga gear.

And, within a week or so of visiting the store, Lucy reached out to me for a product review! Yes, it’s my lucky day.

So, far this is my favorite piece of Lucy gear, the Get Up and Go Quarter Zip! I’ve worn it everyday since receiving it and have received multiple complements on the color and style of the shirt. I love the ruching on the sides, the thumb hole and the soft cotton feel of the shirt. This shirt has been a perfect for wearing over my workout gear on cold mornings and it’ll look great with jeans as well.  I can’t wait to wear it again!

Lucy is having a sale of 25% off today only in celebration of their Birthday! Check it out!

FTC- The shirt was provided for purposes of review and the above opinion is my own.

Cool New Gadgets for P.E. Teachers

August 30th, 2012 · No Comments

Yes, folks, I am what I say.  A Physical Education & Yoga Teacher and the last two weeks of full time work has been kicking my a** and I haven’t even really started teaching yet.   I’m still wondering how all of you full time working mommy’s do it all.

I don’t  have the answers to this, I  just know that if I actually schedule the Fun stuff, I can keep my stress level in check.  Such as massages, pedicures, dinner’s out, hot baths (although not now- S. Cal temps are 105++ right now), and learning how to ask for help.  We were not put on this planet to do everything.  Husbands and kids can pitch in.

So, now to the things that is going to make my PE life easier.

Exhibit A: A ball cart

This lightweight cart is the bomb! It will hold a CD player, tons of balls, the phone and a nice iced coffee. Can’t wait to use it. It’s also fold-able, inexpensive and comes with free shipping from Target. Yipee for me.

Exhibit B: Sony BoomBox with iPod Dock

Inexpensive boom box with decent sound, this boom box will play CD’s or an iPod/iPhone. Target has the best price now, too.

Exhibit C: Speakers for an iPad

I haven’t tried this one yet, but, it will work with my iPad and I plan to use it in the yoga room. Hopefully it will have a remote so that I may be teaching across the room and can forward to different songs!
