This morning I had a great conversation with a mom athlete who is the mother of 2 toddlers ages 3 & 2. Life is super crazy at home with two under the age of 5. I remember those days (but not really). Not all that much. I remember being time starved- for me time. I remember driving to Starbucks in faraway towns regularly so that the kids would take a nap. I remember trying to cook with a baby strapped to my front or back. I remember MANY sleepless nights when one or the other doesn’t sleep. I remember visiting urgent care at all hours of the night for small reasons….The list goes on. I remember that I was working full or part time for most of my boys toddler years. Throughout these years, I have been an athlete. And for all of these years, I have been blogging about being a mother of two boys whose passion is exercise. It doesn’t really matter what exercise, it just had to be something!
Moms need to exercise and for a lot of us, being an athlete defines who were ARE outside of mother, wife, co-worker, etc… This is our “time” during the day that will be ours alone. We (those of us who take exercise seriously) carve it out of the day just so we can have “our” time. It doesn’t matter if we get up at 4 in the morning or workout at 10pm at night. We do it because we love it. We do it because we love to compete and try to make ourselves better. We may do it so that we can chat with our other athletic mom friends about something other than kids and work. Sometimes it is ridiculously hard to make our exercise happen (kids are screaming, diapers are dirty, we are super tired & cranky), however, most of the time when we make it happen, we are happier because of it!
So, if you’re a mom out there working out around your kids, keep it up! If you’re not, why not? Exercise is a good thing!!
