What Happens to Fit Mom on Sugar?

February 10th, 2011 · 4 Comments

The following is a testimony to what actually happens to me when I indulge in sugar. And, by sugar, I mean white sugar, not the sugar in my 70% or more dark chocolate or the less than 1 gram of raw sugar in my coffee, I mean the kind that comes in the form of a muffin or a cookie!! I used to make the best damn chocolate chip cookies, EVAHHHHHH from the time I could read a recipe. 2 cups of white flour, 1 cup of sugar, 2 cups of chocolate chips, etc…and I could pack those cookies in my mouth as fast as I could cook them! Now, closing in on 40, I can’t freakin’ eat those damn cookies!

Why, you might ask? Cause I get sick- sick in the head, in the tummy, and generally everywhere!

Example A: Today, my youngest son got to go to school for the sole purpose of the Valentine’s tea for the moms and dads in his class (I have two sick kids at home at the moment). He was so excited to sing to me and bring me cookies, that I had to eat what he served me. What mom wouldn’t? I ate one blueberry muffin and thought that I’d be fine.
Within fifteen minutes, I had pressure behind my eyes and could feel a head ache starting. We got home from the tea, and I went straight to the couch where I literally passed out for 1 hour and woke up SO FREAKIN’ Cranky you’d thought I had a hang over. Argh… The feelings of crankiness lasted for hours! And, I mean SERIOUS crankiness.

Example B: After a 24 day paleo challenge, I indulged in one of those big a** orca cookies they sell at Sea World and first of all, all I could think of, was when would I get another one, followed, by the WORST headache on the planet followed by the meanest Fit Mommy anyone has ever seen. Ask Fit Daddy, he’ll vouch for me!

And, so the story goes….sugar makes me a mean, mean cranky mommy and even though I still want to eat it, it is JUST DOES NOT GO WELL for me after doing so. And, I’m not even all that excited about dates anymore!

Can you share a similar experience with the highs and lows of sugar?

This same thing happened to me just yesterday…via choc chip cookie. I mostly abstain from white sugar/flour etc and when I cheat with bread or cookies always end up with headache, fogginess, bloat and mommy cranky pants. Why do I bother when makes me feel like crap after? That dang cookie sucks me in! :)

I don’t sty away from sugar as much as I should, but usually when I have a cookie, or a piece of cake, I know I’ve gone to far – I get a mild headache, I feel groggy, and the back of my throat gets a tickle that makes me feel like I’m catching a cold. That’s actually the biggest symptom for me. And I still want more sugar!

I have to keep away from sugar because it it just not worth it, I feel bad for at least 24 hours after eating it.
