Running Marathons & Pregnancy

June 4th, 2010 · 3 Comments

The New York Times recently ran an article about Kara Goucher and Paula Radcliffe who are both professional marathon runners who are now also pregnant and still training hard!

Hooray for them!

I know all of you mother’s who were runners before pregnancy have a story to tell on this subject. For me, during my first pregnancy, I was told I Could Not Run!?!?!?! Seriously? I was in my 1st trimester, feeling great, and all of a sudden- WHAM- No running. I had had no side effects & no pains whatsoever! And running was my means of exercise. Overnight (it seemed) I’d gained 20 pounds! Long story short, we invested in a treadmill, and I spent the rest of my pregnancy reading and walking on it for hours!

How many of you ran through your pregnancies? Times are changing and I think that if you’re body is used to a certain kind of exercise that you should be able to keep doing it when you are pregnant!

Thoughts on this?

When I discovered I was pregnant last year, my first question to the doctor was “Do I have to stop working out?”. She and I had a lengthy discussion and I was given the green light to continue with my normal routine with a few slight modifications (no biking as the risk of falling was higher). However, nearly every other person I knew was worried that I was doing harm — and I lost count the number of times I was asked “Should you be doing that?”.

I worked out until the night I was induced. And I delivered a happy, healthy baby girl. Moreover, I amazed the nurses by being out of bed the morning following my c-section….and moving with no pain. Even my doctor was amazed at my recovery time and credits my great physical shape to it.

I Love Kimbery’s comment. I am not surprised you felt great the next day. I think too often women get pregnant and stop moving and that results in harder pregnancies, labor, and recovery. Of course everyone is different but I say keep moving any way you can.

My first pregnancy I used the excuse that I was pregnant to not work out.

My second pregnancy I did my best and I ran a 10K and a 5K. During my first trimester. Shortly after the last 5K I started having a lot of back pain and it was just getting too hard to run so I stopped. By the time I hit my 3rd trimester my back stopped hurting and I was ready to start running again but then it was winter in the mountains and that meant -20 degree days so I stopped running until after Lily was born.
