Some days, I spend 3 or more hours in the sun without anything more than an SPF 30 on my face. I have a history of skin cancer in my family and have recently undergone surgery on black, scaly potentially skin cancer mole on my lower leg. According to the American Cancer Society, 50% of all cancers are preventable?!!!?! Skin cancer is obviously an easy one to prevent- just stay out of the sun, right? How many of YOU always where sunscreen?
The American Cancer Society has launched the Choose You campaign an effort to encourage women to take care of their health and prevent cancer. The Choose You campaign has five categories to from: Get Active, Protect Your Skin, Get Regular Health Screenings, Eat Right and Quit Smoking. According to the American Cancer Society, if we as women in general took a more active roll in our health- we may be able to prevent cancer and live longer healthier lives. Obviously, I am all for this, and yet, admittedly, I fall short in the health screenings and in protecting my skin. These are two things I need to work on this year.
The American Cancer Society provided me with a Healthy Lifestyle Gift bag and has one for one of you as well! In the gift bag, one winner will receive a $50$10 gift card to Walgreens, a cute t-shirt, a stainless steel water bottle, coupons and pens from Sprite Zero and a pretty blue flower pin with Swarovski Crystals.
HOW CAN YOU WIN THE “GET HEALTHY” GIFT BAG?
Simply leave a comment on one habit you’d most like to change in your life right now! Winner will be chosen at Random on Friday, May, 28th at 9pm. Winner must reside in the US.

I’d like to stop drinking diet soda. I *know* it is bad for me, but it tastes so good. I am trying–I didn’t buy any at the store today. So hopefully my resolve can last.

I would love to make working out more of an integral part of my daily routine. That’s my worst habit right now, and it needs to be fixed!

Protect my skin – I am blonde, fair skinned with freckles. As a teenager I spent hours baking myself in the sun in an attempt to tan. Ouch! I am more cautious now about avoiding sunburns, but I need to do better. Especially using a daily sunscreen on my face.

The biggest habit I would like to change is my eating habits. Often in my busy day of mom to three (including one special needs girly
), military wife, college student, and full time instructional assistant, I forget that food needs to consist of more than something right out of the package. Top that with my father’s heart disease which totally freaks me out…I need to make a change! I actually just bought a new bicycle too to help kick start a new, healthy lifestyle!

Should I choose the carrot with the “crunch” or the cookie with the “sugar crunch”? Well, I need to increase the number of times I choose the carrot!!

There are so many habits I’d like to change. Probably the biggest is getting out of bed faster. I need to get moving in the morning if I’m going to get my workouts in.

I’d love to get up earlier in the morning and at least get a quick workout in, so that I don’t take too much time away from my family in the evenings.

In my 20′s I had a friend in her 30′s who use to get on me about using sunscreen. At that age I did not care. Now I am just barely in my 30′s and I use it all the time. Since I bike to and from work every day plus an hour run on my lunch break and I live at 7700 feet I need sunscreen. Over the past year I have stopped using spf 8 and now use 15 or 30 (yes I know I need to get rid of the 15 and use 30 but I want to finish the bottle). I put sunscreen on every morning and I have a reminder on my computer to put it on before lunch.
One habit of mine that I would like to make healthier is no more sweets before bed and drink less wine. I am working on these and the sweets are hard to give up.

Being a personal trainer doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m at the top of my game all the time. As a mommy of two awesome boys, I find myself putting my OWN workouts on the back burner while working on the programs of my clients and trying to keep my boys healthy and happy. I want to jumpstart my own workouts so I can ensure that I’m getting the results I help my clients achieve.
