All It Takes Is a Smile

December 31st, 2009 · No Comments

Dear X (insert business of your choice),

The people you hire to work for you, represent YOU (the business).  If that person can have a good attitude, smile at the customers and genuinely make an effort to do a good job, then, you’ve got it!  If the person doesn’t smile at the customers, treats them with disrespect, then you are going to lose customers.  It’s really that simple.

When I enter a shop of any kind, I expect the staff to be friendly.  Just a hello, how are you today works for me.  I’m friendly and I expect the same in return.  If the business requires the phone, then, you better have excellent phone service and be able to be friendly even if you don’t know the answer.  Twice this week, I’ve had disrespectful people on the phone and have since lost my business (climbing gym loses $150 in sales because they couldn’t answer the phone).  Don’t you think it’s sad for the business?

Consider the old girl scout rules, Do Unto Others What You Would Do Unto You.  I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir here, we have or still are employees (of something) and we need to treat our fellow neighbors with respect.

Just smile and be nice!
