What is Fitness?

December 11th, 2009 · 2 Comments

A question I’ve often pondered…what makes us fit? What is the definition of fitness?  Who thinks they have awesome all around good fitness?  Yes, I can run 26 miles if I wanted, but, does that mean I’m fit?  Can I do a full complete pull-up without assistance- no- not yet.  Do I have the skill to complete 5+ rounds of wall balls followed by double unders (with a rope)…ummm…sortof?!  In my mind, if I’ve gotten a “workout” then I did my duty as being a fit mommy, but, really how can we define ourselves as fit?  What makes the difference between a sedentary person versus a cyclist who may be super strong on a bike but has absolutely no upper body strength what so ever?

Obviously, I have more questions than answers.  Anybody want to chime in on this? Comments are appreciated.

Here is one article I found on the definition of fitness by Greg Glassman.

What Is Fitness and Who Is Fit?

Outside Magazine crowned triathlete Mark Allen “the fittest man on earth.” Let’s just assume for a moment that this famous six-time winner of the IronMan Triathlon is the fittest of the fit, then what title do we bestow on the decathlete Simon Poelman who also possesses incredible endurance and stamina, yet crushes Mr. Allen in any comparison that includes strength, power, speed, and coordination?

Perhaps the definition of fitness doesn’t include strength, speed, power, and coordination though that seems rather odd. Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary defines “fitness” and being “fit” as the ability to transmit genes and being healthy. No help there. Searching the Internet for a workable, reasonable definition of fitness yields disappointingly little. Worse yet, the NSCA, the most respected publisher in exercise physiology, in their highly authoritative Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning doesn’t even attempt a definition.

Crossfit’s Fitness
For CrossFit the specter of championing a fitness program without clearly defining what it is that the program delivers combines elements of fraud and farce. The vacuum of guiding authority has therefore necessitated that CrossFit’s directors provide their own definition of fitness. That’s what this issue of CrossFit Journal is about, our “fitness.”

    Hi, I love your website!:)
I think that is a good question-What is Fit? We hear it alot, but sadly I dont think many people are. Recently I started P90X and I think that reminds me of “Fit”. All around yoga to weight lifting to cardio, the whole works! Being Fit is obviously being in shape, but I belive you must have stamina, endurance and muscles too! Also I think that Fit should include on the inside also. Healthy eating would make sure that you are fit inside and out. I dont believe just because you are a size 2 doesnt mean you are fit. I believe that it should be an all around total mind body deal… inside and out…. all around up and down. FIT :)
