Greetings from Big Bear California! My family and I are out of town for the next few days to celebrate the holidays in the beautiful southern California mountains. Although, there is no snow, temperatures are in the low 50′s in the day and high 20′s at time. We are excited to pull out the spiderman hats and gloves from Kmart and go play in the dirt today!
Next up: CrossFit Foundation Classes #3 and #4. The cool thing is that there is a lot of gymnastics in CrossFit- and therefor all the yoga I know completely translates! Whoo Hoo. Just a small boost of confidence for me. CrossFit is run like a classroom. You come in and do a functional warm-up that relates to the lesson being taught that day followed by the “skill” lesson followed by the W.O.D. (the holy sh** part). Monday, I learned the official Kipping pull up. Thankfully, I get to use a 2″ wide thick rubber band for my foot, so that I am able to complete a pull up! It’s pretty amazing how much power it takes to do the full pull-up! There is practically a complete backbend when working on the explosive power of the Kipping pull-up. The workout for this day was manageable at least for me….5 pull-ups, 10 push-ups, 15 squats done continuously for 20 minutes. How many sets can you complete in that time?
Day #4: Deadlift and the Medicine Ball Clean.
Workout: 21 Deadlifts, 21 Sit-ups, 21 Med Ball Cleans, 200 meter run. Then repeat for 15 repetitions, then repeat for 9 repetitions.
UGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG…Yet another thing that scares the crap out of me. The Deadlift. It wasn’t that I couldn’t do it. I was scared of how much weight was on it. They taught it with a PVC pipe, then I moved on a 15 pound bar, then a 22 pound bar and then lucky me….. the bar was weight. Like 45 pounds on each side for the first set. Then it went up from there. The scariest part for me is attempting to lift the bar. My trainer, Rachel, is a tiny little bombshell and she yelled out, “I just did that with 200 pounds, you can totally do that!”‘ I can? Really? I’ve never done any Deadlifts in my life and you want me to lift that? Yeah, right. With a lot of coaching, I was able to lift the bar for the second set. Then, the final set. Umm, no. 95 pounds. No. Calvin, my other trainer, helped me get it off the floor, and then I was able to complete 9 repetitions with assistance.. But, oh my. I was having a minor panic attack – mostly worrying that I was going to hurt my back. But, I didn’t. Just another hurdle I am going to overcome. First lessons are always the hardest. That was just the deadlift. I had even more issues learning the Medicine Ball Clean. It’s all in the technique and the fact that my legs were trashed from the deadlifts made it harder.
The coolest thing about CrossFit is that every thing I am learning now is only going to help me later with the running or cycling events I chose to do. The workouts feel like a mini-race and I am still battling all my negative crap–like I can’t do that business that just needs to go away. I love how strong I feel now and I love that fact that I am learning really hard stuff and not completely flunking out. And, the fact that handstands, and lots of other yoga poses are part of the workouts, that I will absolutely be continuing my yoga practice! I refuse to give up things I love for the sake of others…
