Fitness Magazine: Pros and Cons

November 2nd, 2009 · 2 Comments

Fitness Magazine recently wrote to me asking if I’d be interested in reading their magazine and writing about it here. Knowing that I am a fitness NUT, of course, I said yes. And, in all honesty, I have never read this magazine before this month. In the past, I’ve always purchased (if I am purchasing mags- it’d be Runner’s World, Women’s Health, or Clean Eating).

PRO’S:

1. I liked this month’s spa treatment article and the “how to’s” on the Mist Opportunities.  We all should take more time to pamper ourselves- because it can help reduce your stress level.  Yoga, bubble baths, reading, mediating can all help your stress level.  Did any of you do any of those things last week?

2.  I always love the new gadget section in any magazine!  New fitness gadgets, best boots, best mascara, I enjoy reading although, I never buy, LOL!

3.  Recipes were creative and interesting.  I’d be interested in trying the Cheese, Bacon and Cranberry Endive Boats in this months issue.

CONS:

1.  Content.  Although, I could put content under pros because they are offering interesting content, I felt that the majority of the articles focused on the quick, dirty and how to get thin quick slant.  After reading the entire magazine from cover to cover, it really felt like it’s soul purpose was to teach me how to lose weight now.

2.  ADS.  There is a LARGE amount of advertising space offered in this magazine.    Some for healthy things like raisins, but then lots of others for QuickTrim, Slimquick, and Weight Watchers.  The articles on “healthy sleep”  may be there, but, it gets lost in all this advertising- that is absolutely NOT in the order of healthy living.

3.  Strange classifications of workouts.  (It’s highly likely that I am a bit of a yoga/and or/bike snob) but, the article on “Beat Stress Weigh Less” is just plain weird.  {It is true that yoga will help you manage stress and may allow you to weigh less, but…} Why don’t they just call it a sculpt workout?  I’d be happier with that.  Instead, it’s a yoga workout that looks more like “power/cardio yoga” or something.

Although, I did like her top and pants (Capri’s are THE GRILS which I’ve already reviewed here).

So, there you go.  I’m holding out my opinion of this magazine for future issues- and also for content here.  It’s fun to have things to talk about that is likely going to be interesting to you, too.

What do you think of the magazine?

I subscribe to this magazine and I feel the same way. I wish there was more depth to the articles instead of just an overview. This is one reason why I like Runner’s World. They do have good articles but too much advertising. One thing I don’t like is how they allow “bad” advertising. They talk about healthy living and healthy weight loss but you will also find the ad for a pill to lose weight. It would be nice to find a magazine that does not allow their ads to condtradict what their articles say.
