Scary Moments: Teaching 5 year old how to ride on the street

October 12th, 2009 · 3 Comments

“Bike-O”, my kids bike,  has been up and ready for quite a while now.  He has raced it at several local bike races but it has only been ridden street bound once or twice (mainly because I come very close to a panic attack if he is more than 10 feet from me!).

But, today was the day.  Objective: To ride to local park observing all road rules and mommy NOT having a meltdown.

Here we are getting ready.  Youngest is holding “his baby” for the ride.  Oldest is ready.  Like, Oh My Gosh, Can you wait a second for me to get my helmet on??!!?”

Mommy is saying:

“Keep you eyes up!”, “Put your foot down at all stop signs!”, “Pedal straight!!!”, “Try not to cross wheels…”

Mommy is thinking:

Holy Moly, what am I thinking?  Must remain calm.  Breathe.

Looking Calm, but, Not Feeling It.

Benjamin is riding his own bike to my *permanent heart failure*!!  “AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH…” Is how I really feel….

I’m sure I’ll feel this way for lots of new skills they are learning, but, this one was a milestone for us.  The school is about a mile away on a flat street with like 3 stop signs.  Traffic goes around 40 mph on this street.

Want to know the result?

Honestly, he did great.  He wasn’t nervous at all and apparently didn’t feel my anxiety at all.  I didn’t have to do any heavy breathing either.  He stayed right next to me the entire way.  Thank God!  We had a fabulous time at the park and rode home without incident.

And, naturally, that wasn’t enough, so, we had to keep riding outside till everyone was starving!

What have you done lately that scared you?
