Kids Lunches: What do you pack them?

July 30th, 2009 · 5 Comments

My school is very green.  So green that last year, the PTA bought each staff member and student a Laptop Lunchbox (very cool) !  And the students are not allowed (or should I say frowned upon if they come to school with ziploc baggies)..makes planning their lunches a bit of a chore and time consuming, if you ask me.  Main dishes are the hardest part for us.  Yes, I want my kids to eat healthy, however, I do not always have half an hour to prepare “perfectly” healthy lunches! Do you?

Here’s a list of things that have worked for us in the past:

Edamame Beans

Apple Sauce

Apple Slices (if I peel them)

Raisins

Carrots

1/2 of PB& J

Slices of deli meat, cheese and a mini-pita pocket

String Cheese

Sound familiar?

I am also thankful that my kids and I got the opportunity to try out R.W. Knudson40% less Sugar Organic Juice,  Organic Peanut Butter and Apple Sauces for the purposes of review.  I love the fact that I can offer apple sauce as dessert and they loved it!  They loved the juices, peanut butter and especially all the apple sauce flavors!  Seriously, we have nothing negative to say about any of these products.

However, it’s likely (at least for me) that these products are only going to be found in your local health food store.  Someone want to explain this to me?  Why my local grocery store has to sell the high fructose versions of products and I have to go out of my way to buy the good stuff? So, with the going out of the way, the only other concern I have is going to be the price.  I haven’t checked my store, but, I’d bet these are going to be 30% higher than the grocery store versions.  But, then, you are buying a quality product that is incredibly GREEN (read here) which is a good thing.

So who’s buying  organic?  What’s your thoughts on healthy lunches for kids?

Would we buy any of Santa Cruz’s products again?! Yes, absolutely.  What is your favorite thing for kids lunches or for yours for that matter?

We just don’t have the money to buy organic but I do find some good stuff in our regular grocery store but I do have to search and read the ingredients. I have found all natural peanut butter with peanuts being the only ingredient, the same goes for applesauce. I can also buy Rudy’s organic bread which has some added sugar but at least it is not high fructose corn syrup.

I try to be green with my lunches too–avoid the plastic baggies whenever possible. We have friends who live in Tokyo who sent the girls little Bento boxes–so cute! I love sending the girls off with yogurt, pasta salad, or the cooked chicken you find in the deli section. I don’t know if they get sick of eating sandwiches but I get sick of making them!

I just brought A. back a special lunch bag from Germany. It’s pink and looks like a ballerina purse so she loves it! Lately we’ve been having yogurts, fruit, PB & J, lettuce roll-ups (lettuce, turkey, cheese), apple sauce…a lot of the same things your boys are eating :-)

Hardboiled eggs put warm into mini-soup thermos works well. My kids won’t eat them if they’re “cold”. I use ziplocks, but I do try and wash & reuse them unless they’re really grimy.

I pick & choose my organics (not necessarily based on anything logical).

Great post! I found your blog through Fitarella. This was interesting to me as I have a daughter about to enter the first grade and will have to pack lunches for the first time. I bought her a thermos for warm whole wheat pasta marinara and soups (n the winter). Also am thinkin’ Greek yogurt w/ fruit and a bit of Nature’s Path granola or hummus and pita as more options? I know it will be a bit of a push and pull after she sees what her friends get in their lunch but I think (and hope!) we will find some healthy balance together.
I do buy all-organic dairy, meat, nuts/nut butters and “dirty dozen” fruits. Other organic items are more random. We love the Santa Cruz strawberry applesauce!
