Can you eat your sunscreen?

May 27th, 2009 · 4 Comments

Just recently I heard the term “edible sunscreen” and thought whoever wrote it was crazy!!

sweetpotato

I mean, come on….you can NOT eat foods that can prevent sun damage, right? And to someone who spends upwards of 4 hours in the hot California sun daily- the concept of eating your sunscreen got my attention.

But, maybe you can…If I am reading this link correctly, an increase in caroteniods “may be used in oral sun protectants and contribute to the maintenance of skin health” (link from Pub Med).

Where can I get more caroteniod?

It is in sweet potatoes, carrots, apricots, squash, green leafy vegetables, tomatoes.

Who is willing to forgo the sunscreen in favor of food? Who here is still going to put sunscreen on?

I deeply, deeply despise sunblock lotions and sprays, but I have a feeling that all of the sweet potatoes in the world wouldn’t protect my fair skin in the summer. However, since all of the foods listed above have various other health benefits, sun protection might add some incentive to eat them.

I’m with Lindsay… I don’t like most sunblocks but I seriously doubt I could eat enough produce to count on that 100% as my sun protection. Even if I do eat those items regularly!

Now how many sweet potatoes will I need to eat to fully, 100% prevent me from getting sunburned or skin cancer? I am assuming it is a TON and a half! I think I will keep putting my sunscreen on.
