“Yoga is the means of yoking our awareness to the deep rhythms that heal and integrate us in an age that challenges our inner compass to stay in the flow.” Taken from Shiva Rea’s website.
This brand new DVD by Shiva Rea called Surf Yoga Soul will be released on May 5th. I’ve had the opportunity to preview it and as always her DVD’s are completely different than any traditional yoga I have ever done. This one is designed for the surfer and the yoga matrix pays particular attention to a surfers needs such as balance, strength and flexibility. I enjoy the opportunity to choose the matrix that’d I’d like to work on rather than trying to complete a 90 minute practice. On the Surf Yoga Soul DVD, Shiva offers fairly complex and difficult flow sequences. She is one strong woman! If you recall the old lady in crane pose, Shiva turns that pose on her side and puts both legs on one elbow. Now that I’ve had three whole weeks of the yoga teacher training, my perspective is shifting on DVD’s from home. They generally move much faster than you would in a class situation (or I move slower- not sure which) and you might not get enough instruction in a DVD format than you would in a class, although, this too is relative to where you attend a yoga class! Bottom line, I am not sure this is a beginner DVD- more like intermediate with some poses that are very advanced.
THERE’S ONE FOR YOU!
Please leave a comment about your current yoga practice (or not) to be entered to win! Winner will be chosen at Random on Monday, May 4th, 2009 at 9pm.

I used to do yoga all the time…then I had kids. It’s ironic. Now I need it the most and don’t have much time or solitude to do it. I have done some on Wii. Not the same though.

I REALLY tried to get into yoga. Podcasts, poses from FitSugar…but something is not working….maybe its because I like to move more and this is too passive

I haven’t done yoga in a while, but I have gotten out my one dvd and plan on integrating it into my workout routine soon. I’d love to try this one out – but I’ll be away from a computer all next week. So if I win (however slight the chance) I won’t know until next Sunday night!

I took yoga last semester and it was awesome. I was lean and flexible and my hips didn’t hurt when I ran. I couldn’t fit it into my schedule this semester, and I can feel the difference in my body when I try to do other activities. Yoga at home would be just the ticket.

What yoga practice?!?! I did ask my husband for mother’s day to get me a 8 day punch card to my favorite yoga studio (and teacher) in town. There is one yoga show on Fit TV that I have watched and wanted to get into but she moves SO fast that there is barely time to get into one pose before moving into the next – even at the beginning.

I think I’ve mentioned it before, but I do a 15 minute Yoga for Runners after my runs as a way of stretching. I do a 45-60 minute practice 2-3 times a week as well. I need yoga to get through life… not just to recover better from exercise, but to clear my mind from daily stressors.

I have her Prenatal Yoga Video, and recently acquired the Dance Trance Yoga.
Wow! I’d love to get this DVD, as I really like that she is kinda “out there” with her Yoga!
My practice? I teach, and when I’m not teaching, I try to do my workouts, yoga with intention of using my breath completely. (Even when I’m driving, as there are lots of distractions on the road!)

I’ve only been doing yoga for a month. I’ve been using the Step 1 and 2 videos from YogaJournal, plus doing some of the workouts from Yogatoday. The closest yoga class for me is over an hour a way, so I only do videos. The DVD would be interesting to try. I doubt I could keep up, but I try to learn from everything I watch or read.

I have a 9 year long yoga practice, and recently started teaching (just last year). I’ve actually found that the act of teaching others has helped to improve my own practice in an incredible way.

I was practicing yoga under the instruction of a good friend. We held classes once a month in her home, which was the basement apartment of a house. Sadly, her landlord needed to move a family member in, so she had to move out. As soon as she finds a new place, we will continue again. Namaste.
