Today, I had the MOST amazing experience in yoga. We had a two hour yoga session with Carmen. From this point on, I will be referring to her as MY TEACHER. It was nothing like I’ve ever done before in my life. In fact, nothing in my town could even come close to what I experienced today. I believe the Yoga Works method is to teach (I’m opining)a combination of Iyengar and Vinyasa Flow yoga. Iyengar yoga pays particular attention to alignment and refers often to B.K.S. Iyengar’s book as our “bible” for our training- with the addition of a Vinyasa flow kind of yoga. Meaning there is NO breaks- we go go go. In fact some of the students were commenting on the fact that in other yoga classes, there has always been a pause before moving on to the next pose. Ha ha ha. Not in this yoga. She reminded us that Yes, she did intend for it to be intense and Yes, you are in a teacher training program, it should be hard and Yes, if this were a public class she might have thrown a few more “child’s poses” in there, but this is what Yoga Works is. Hard as hell, but, oh, so good.
In the Yoga Works teacher training program, there are TWO teachers and two teacher assistants for 16 students. That alone is comment worthy. How many times in your life have you taken a class or a yoga session when there are more than ONE teacher for X number of students?
This is going to be one amazing journey. It’s now 9pm. I’ve done a 2 hour yoga class, 35 minutes of high intensity cardio on my bike, driven 120 miles, listened to a 2 hour lecture, made dinner for my family and I feel great. Tired, but happy. That class this morning took SO much concentration that I couldn’t worry or do anything else except be in that yoga pose. And my kids are in a good mood.
This was the BEST thing I could have ever done for my body, my family, my cycling. All of it. I’m on a yoga high. Please remind me of this if I ever whine again. Signing off now with my stack of yoga reading to do.
Namaste,
Fit Mommy

Wow you do sound like you’re on a yoga high – that’s awesome! So happy for you. I dug through my closets this weekend and found two old yoga videos! Yahoo! I’m going to try it out when my daughter goes down for her nap this afternoon.

That sounds so wonderful!! I am glad you had a hard but fun time.
Most of my yoga experience (and my favoite) is what you just described – Iyengar and Vinyasa Flow yoga.

Fit Mommy,
I have not read all over your blog; not sure where you live. I imagine Colorado; not sure why.
Anyway, my sister has been teaching since 1997 I think, and has her own studio in Portland, Maine, The Yoga Exchange. You can check it out at http://www.theyogaexchange.com. In case you are looking for additional resources
or places to take yoga when you are travelling. Question – do you train systematically for cycling races? How do you do it?
