Do you have a teacher?

April 5th, 2009 · 1 Comment

At the completion of the first full day of my yoga training, I can honestly say that I know nothing really about yoga! That’s the way it’s supposed to be, right? This is a teacher training program and I will know my business when I’m done! We spent the first two hours of our Saturday doing yoga. That was amazing enough. I’ve never been in a two hour yoga class. I found out later (didn’t know at the time) that the majority of the poses were for the neutral rotation standing poses.

Two main things that were driven home to me yesterday. One is the need for all of us to have a teacher. A teacher whose class you attend regularly- who knows what is going on with your body and can address what it needs in a regular class session. Our trainers all have teachers. As you know, my practice has been sporadic at best, lately. In our town, there are two yoga studios that offer yoga- and I’ve never had a yoga teacher who really paid attention to my alignment in any particular pose. Yoga Works is all about alignment. We spent the better part of three hours analyzing 1 pose- Mountain Pose (there was lots of other stuff).

The other thing is that in order to teach yoga effectively, I need to be able to describe what happens in my body. Which means that in order to be a good teacher, you have to have LOTS of practice with yoga.

Your turn:

How many of you attend yoga regularly and have the same teacher every time?
