Get Active, Stay Accountable: Polar Watch to Giveaway!

March 16th, 2009 · 248 Comments

You know that I am a big believer in squeezing exercise in whenever and where ever I can get it.

In addition, I’m all about the EXTRA- that is what you can get with your kids and throughout your day. For example, today was my “rest” day, but, I never completely rest. I took my 3 year old, 40 pound kid in the Burley for an hour spin around the neighborhood. And hubby pulled the 45 pound kid on the Tag-a-long. Exercise in whatever form is good for the mind, body and soul. 25 minutes of a hard effort is better than no effort and an extra 30 minutes of running with the kids COUNTS. Polar (whom I am very familiar with since I never workout without my heart rate monitor) has a new watch out called the FA20 Activity Computer designed for cross training. This watch is designed to encourage both men and women to get out there and get busy! Calculate your steps, duration and calories for your walks with the dog, playing with the kids, playing golf- whatever. An activity counter such as this would be a great tool for new exercisers or YOUNG exercisers that need encouragement and data to keep them going. As a phys ed teacher, I’d love to see my students start off with a pedometer such as this so that they can actually track their progress. Bet they’d do a lot more if they could see the numbers ticking by…And, I could use it to my advantage!

Now, you will have no excuses to get outside and play with your kids!

fa20m_front_240x298_36

FA20 Activity Computer comes with lots of extra bells and whistles. You can track your workouts, calories burned and lots of other useful data on the Polar Personal Trainer website. Even better, using the Polar Flow Link, you can quickly download your data.

ONE FOR YOU!!

Polar USA is giving away one FA20 Activity Computer to one lucky winner. Retail value is $120 and the winner can pick black or white. In order for a chance to win, please submit a comment on how you squeeze exercise in throughout your day or how you think this watch will help you stay accountable to your goals. Winner will be chosen at Random on Friday, March 20th at 9pm PST.

Edited to add:  This one is NOT a heart rate monitor.

I work harder when I can find a way to compete against myself. By being able to see how hard I’m working, I can force myself to work harder and therefore will be held accountable to meet my goals. I’d love to try this watch… thanks!

Wow, leave me out of the drawing I want someone who will really get more incentive to workout to win it…but I love the whole concept!! I love being active so I’d just wear it and probably exhaust myself trying to be increasingly active every day :)

I use a pedometer to make sure I stay off my butt for at least 10,000 steps.

I put my recumbant bike in the media room so I can pass time and channel surf.

I bought a fun weighted hula hoop!

I jump on the trampoline with my kids.

OMG their new design is amazing!
I normally try to squeeze it in the AM, before the day starts….Otherwise right after work, which leaves the afternoon free!

I have been running for decades. I run over an hour each day. This exercise gives me added energy each day to complete my daily chores, so this is a time saver really!

I try to go the the gym 4 times a week while my son is at preschool but it usually ends up being around 3 and on the days that he’s home, I try to do work out videos or something like that – but it’s really hard to be motivated if I’m not in a gym setting for some reason.

  • 17 Carol Lawrence // Mar 16, 2009 at 9:17 am

I walk at the mall with a friend every chance I get. Knowing the results from my walks would motivate me to do even more walking.

I’m pregnant with #2 and have been having lots of hip pain, so I’m extremely limited on what I can and can not do. But as soon as this baby comes, I’m going to need something to motivate me to get moving again and this would be perfect!

  • 22 Margaret Smith // Mar 16, 2009 at 10:57 am

I try to walk extra distance, whenever I go anywhere. I try to park further away and walk.
In addition, I also love to walk after dinner, whenever the weather permits. It’s my time to unwind, plus it feels great.
    Thanks so much.

  • 23 Robert // Mar 16, 2009 at 11:14 am

I have body weight exercise stations around the house at each door between rooms. Once per day at each station I have to perform the exercise.

  • 24 Carol // Mar 16, 2009 at 11:32 am

I think about exercise a lot! I do tummy squeezes while at the computer, and park far away from my destination. I also use the stairs a lot. I’d love to win this for my workout sessions!

  • 25 Marcia // Mar 16, 2009 at 11:52 am

10,000 steps per day is my goal but my pedometer is old and unreliable – love to win this new gadget

  • 26 Pamela // Mar 16, 2009 at 11:55 am

I try to move around 3 hours per day. It’s really hard to estimate. I look at my watch, and try to add up the time. Quite frequently, I forget my total! This watch would be perfect.

  • 27 Yvonne Huff // Mar 16, 2009 at 12:14 pm

I take a walk every day, rain or shine!

  • 29 kate p // Mar 16, 2009 at 12:25 pm

When others take a “smoking break” I put on my walking shoes and take a power walk around the building (similar to around the block). That 5 minutes keeps me fresh and alert – and on track to meet my health goals.

  • 30 Alice C // Mar 16, 2009 at 12:31 pm

i work out early in the morning :0)

  • 31 Joe Hrdlicka // Mar 16, 2009 at 12:54 pm

Working out early in the morning hours leaves me with more time for work and family endeavors. Would love to try the FA 20 with some of my running activities.

  • 32 Michael Capp // Mar 16, 2009 at 12:57 pm

I’m an avid weightlifting and coach throughout the year, which keeps me active. I also make it a point to take a mile or two walk after work with my daughter on nice days.

  • 33 Maria // Mar 16, 2009 at 1:10 pm

I stay at home with my 7 month old daughter (with no car). Before she arrived, I was working out at the gym, but since I’m home now and can’t get there without a car, it has been difficult to get motivated to exercise in different ways. Now I to build in any form of exercise USING my daughter! I lay her across my arms and do bicep curls. When she’s lying on the floor I do pushups around her (kissing her each time I go down). I let her lie on my knees and do those knee-in crunch things. When it’s warm enough outside, we take long walks in the Baby Bjorn or sling to the park and around the neighborhood. I think that the polar watch will really help keep me motivated to continue to exercise this way with my daughter, especially in the coming months as the weather starts to get better.

  • 34 Mary Casper // Mar 16, 2009 at 1:12 pm

I sure could use this as I need to shift a few pounds

  • 35 Lindsey // Mar 16, 2009 at 1:17 pm

I work hard to get in as many morning workouts in each week as possible. Although getting up before 5 AM some days is tough, the rewards are so great, and nothing beats the feeling of productivity you gain after a good morning workout, in addition to the pure satisfaction of knowing you are now done for the day. I make a point to switch up my routine, otherwise I plateau very easily. I always need something to challenge me, and I do well when I know the goals and outcomes I am trying to achieve. An avid user of Polar Heart rate monitors, I could never workout again without one. Knowing how many calories I need to burn to maintain or lose weight ensures I get the appropriate amount of activity in each day. I can only imagine the great things I could do with the new FA20 Activity Computer. Being a digital gal as well, I am always with blackberry or laptop in hand. Everything I do is kept track off online…this heart rate monitor would be a very welcome addition to my daily routine! Thanks for the chance to win!

  • 36 Jackie // Mar 16, 2009 at 1:25 pm

After school my kids love to play on the playground with their friends. So the moms and I walk the perimeter of the playground and chat while they play. It’s a win-win.

I work from home quite a bit, and fit in 15 minute workouts on my stationary bike in between conference calls.

  • 50 Mary-Jo // Mar 16, 2009 at 4:26 pm

I bike ride around the neighborhood with the kids and we go for a walk after dinner in the evenings.

  • 51 Djp // Mar 16, 2009 at 4:45 pm

i am in on this one

  • 52 mamalikeyou // Mar 16, 2009 at 4:54 pm

I always have a back-up plan. If the kids are sick and home and I can’t get to the gym I’ll use my on-demand and do a hard yoga or pilates class (the kids usually make fun of me from the stairs while I do it).

I always take the stairs, walk to town, wrestle with the boys, etc.

Most importantly, exercise has become part of my weekly schedule, not something I try to “squeeze in”. It’s a priority because it makes everything else in my life work better.

And heart monitors rock. If I was lucky enough to win this one, it would go to my husband or someone in my spin class.

  • 54 Angela J // Mar 16, 2009 at 5:06 pm

I am a casual runner that likes to do a little light weight lifting. I have been in pretty good shape now for a few years since by daughter was born. Lately I have had a really hard time finding the energy to workout. This could be the perfect motivation for me to better my self.

  • 56 Katy // Mar 16, 2009 at 5:19 pm

I lift toddlers while I teach preschool…they make great weights :) and I run laps around the soccer field while my daughter practices. I also keep dumbells in the living room and do a few reps during commercials. I would love to win this little gem…and really try to set some goals for myself!

  • 59 Michelle M // Mar 16, 2009 at 6:23 pm

I try to squeeze exercising in after my husband comes home from work. He watches my 2 year old while I go for a brisk walk. I also use Netflix on our XBox for work out tapes. I don’t always make it through the whole thing, but a little is better than none.

  • 60 Linda Lansford // Mar 16, 2009 at 6:41 pm

I work out 6 days a week and this will help.

  • 61 Teresa L // Mar 16, 2009 at 6:51 pm

There are times I become overwhelmed with exercise and I have to really fight to just get up and do it. Once I have and it’s over I am so glad that I did. I feel alive and wonder why I struggled so hard with the idea of doing it in the first place. To help get my body moving I like to put the music on and turn it up especially on the songs that help me to move the best like Pump it by blackeyed peas. Thanks for the contest!!

  • 62 lee // Mar 16, 2009 at 6:52 pm

I belong to a gym and there are usually classes that accommodate my schedule. This will really help me in cardio classes to see or make sure that i am working hard enough.

I live in NYC so I walk… A LOT. I take the subway 3-4 times a day and almost always get off one stop sooner than the normal stop. When the weather is nice and I have the time between clients, I skip the subway entirely and walk the whole way. I also take the stairs whenever possible. And of course 4-6 days a week I get in a solid workout (45-60 minutes of cardio + 30 minutes of strength training) at the gym!

  • 76 Sarah Z // Mar 17, 2009 at 1:58 am

I try to go for a walk right when I get home from work. My daughter goes with me most days so we can talk about our days then!
    Thanks

  • 77 Rachel Newman // Mar 17, 2009 at 2:16 am

First, I start my day with a positive attitude. A positive attitude gives me the positive energy to believe that I can accomplish what I want to for the day. If I do that, I find the strength to workout, and I haven’t missed a day – in over two months!

  • 78 Terry Vanderpool // Mar 17, 2009 at 2:21 am

    I walk 4 and 1/2 miles everyday

  • 79 Whitney Gates // Mar 17, 2009 at 3:14 am

I try to walk a longer distance whenever I can. I take trips loading bags from the store to my car, park further away, take stairs, take laundry to the closet in more trips. Also, piggy back rides for the kids doesn’t hurt either.
I would use the watch to monitor what I do and hopefully see where I can do more to take my fitness to the next level.

  • 80 Anne // Mar 17, 2009 at 3:24 am

What a wonderful watch. If I were to win I would always try to outdo myself from the day before! I manage to sneak in extra exercise by taking stairs when I can and walking when I don’t absolutely have to drive!

    Thanks

I also put on active music while I’m cooking and doing other household chores, which encourages me to dance during my little patches of downtime rather than sit down.

  • 108 joanna smith // Mar 18, 2009 at 12:48 pm

I squeeze exercise into my daily routine by getting up extra early before my 3 children wake up and starting my day off with Yoga. I try and do my Yoga poses at least 4-5 days a week. That truly allows me to center myself and stay grounded ready to face anything and everything that the day will bring. Then once my kids are off to school and my husband is still home with our 6 month old baby, I fit in jogging. I have been running the same route for a few years now and I run about 5-6 miles. I try and get my jogging in before my husband leaves for work and I run at least 3-4 times a week. I have to stick to this schedule because if I didn’t once the day gets into full swing I would never be able to “squeeze” it in. It has become a way of life for me, and luckily my husband is in full support of me doing this.

This amazing watch will help me stay accountable to my goals and hopefully allow me to even exceed them and increase them regularly by serving as the tool for me to actually monitoring activity and how many steps I am actually running instead of my just guessing which is what I am doing now. I never thought about wearing it all the time so I can really get an idea of how active I am throughout the day, perhaps I am more active than I even realized. I think this watch will also be shared by everyone in the family. We are all active in a variety of sports and activities and it would be fun for the whole family to gauge their activity levels, heart rate, and steps taken – something enjoyable for the family to use together. Thank you for the opportunity to enter!

  • 112 Huguette E. // Mar 18, 2009 at 2:00 pm

I make sure exercise is one of the first things I do in the morning. Seems to be the only time to squeeze it in. The monitor would help me to see if I’m working hard enough.

  • 113 Bettina // Mar 18, 2009 at 2:07 pm

This would really help me get rid of the baby weight! I try to get in some weight time or a little cardio either first thing in the morning or right before bed.

I try to run a few times a week at lunch – wearing the watch will serve as a reminder to get my butt up and go exercise.

  • 120 Lori F // Mar 18, 2009 at 6:06 pm

I make it a point to get to the gym at least 3x a week. It’s not easy getting up at 4:30am, but I recall hearing once that Oprah has to ‘squeeze’ time in for exercise…and if she can do it, I certainly have no excuse!

This tracker would be an awesome way to validate how hard I really am working. Thanks for the entry!

  • 121 Beckie Mostello // Mar 18, 2009 at 6:18 pm

ohhhhh! I so want one of these! I have hit a big weight loss plateau and I have gotten some suggestions to monitor my heart rate so I can increase the intensity of my workout. I try to fit in workouts most days of the week. I take my son to the Y daycare- which I feel guilty about doing, but I realize I need to also work on me and not be mommy 110% of my day. I also fit in long walks when I can plus do the Wii with my daughter. I have checked out these monitors/watches before and I thought they were a bit out of my price range… I am even willing to blog about my experiences with the watch!!
    Thanks- great contest idea!

I add exercise a little bit at a time. I won’t let myself have breakfast without 15 minutes on the treadmill. When I’m doing laundry I do squats, lunges and stretching. I also park my car fairly far from shops, offices etc. (not too far for safety reasons) and I try not to sit for long periods.

  • 141 Jennifer S // Mar 19, 2009 at 7:50 am

This sounds like such a great watch! It would definitely help me keep track of the exercising am I getting and motivate me to burn more calories. Usually, I try to incorporate exercise in my everyday routine. I bike to work 3 days a week instead of taking the car. I also like to ride my stationary bike while watching tv, or lifting some small weights for arm toning exercises. I think if everyone takes a look at their days, they could easily find ways to incorporate exercise into their daily routine.

  • 142 Leigh Nichols // Mar 19, 2009 at 7:51 am

“Accountablity”, now there is a word that I really need to learn and live by. I think of exercise daily. I think of all the things I could be doing, SHOULD be doing and then I don’t. At the end of the day there is a big guilt I give myself and basically that has become my way of life. This watch would hold me accountable, something I really need, I need that push, that drive and seeing the numbers I think could really inspire me to get off my butt and be accountable for my health and well being not only for myself but for my children and my husband. Face it, I know a healthier person radiates happiness, that has not been me. Cross my fingers I can win and watch my numbers change.

I am a huge fan of technology and I am only a recent fan of working out. I find it hard to figure out if I am working out enough and become easily bored. It would be awesome to watch the numbers go by, to see that I am actually making progress.

I make it a point to try to get in some extra running around with my 2-year-old when we go to the indoor gym or the park instead of standing around watching her play. Thanks!

Thanks for the opportunity to win.

  • 237 lace // Mar 21, 2009 at 2:06 am

I park far away in the parking lot and try to take the stairs as often as possible.

  • 238 Mollie G. // Mar 21, 2009 at 2:15 am

The hospital complex I work in has many multi-floored buildings, with elevators that I never use. And I get a good workout every day since I have to spend time on several floors of just about every building. And then the parking garage is a ten-minute walk, and I usually park on the seventh floor and take the stairs up and down, so… Wearing this “Activity Computer” might actually be a little bit scary, to finally see just how much I’m putting into each day! Thanks for the chance!

You may think “Wii-FIT, phuiie”, but don’t sell it too short — it definitely helps to track daily BMI changes, and gives a structure to some Yoga and Strength-training exercises. And the aerobics options are no laughing matter either. If you’re maintaining a 160-170 heart rate for half an hour, it doesn’t matter that much whether you’re on a treadmill or a street or using a Wii-Fit balance board for step-aerobics. I actually have an early model Polar watch that uses the chest band to capture heart-rate, etc, and the whole setup works quite well for me. Nice contest!

I squeeze in time on my lunch break and hit the bike abefore going to bed.

  • 241 Larry West // Mar 21, 2009 at 3:09 am

I squeeze in exercise by walking to and from the bus stop — which is about a mile away!

  • 242 A Casson // Mar 21, 2009 at 3:31 am

Between going here and there I keep track of how much exercise I get, i think the watch would help me more in this matter.skyxsky27(at)gmail.com

I finally have my last baby in 1/2 day kindergarten. First thing I do after shooing every one to the bus is hit the elliptical. Always a great start to the day.

  • 244 Angela K // Mar 21, 2009 at 4:01 am

I squeeze in a few squats while trying to get my baby to fall asleep!

  • 245 Stacey // Mar 21, 2009 at 4:13 am

I basically chase my children around. A lot.

  • 246 Caryn B // Mar 21, 2009 at 5:39 am

I jump on the Wii Fit after my son goes to sleep

  • 247 Tammy Greer // Mar 21, 2009 at 6:04 am

I squeeze exercise in each day by trying to do as much walking as possible. If I go to the grocery store, I’ll park as far away as possible from the entrance to get in those extra steps. All the walking makes me feel so much better at the end of the day.

I have a pretty active job, I’m always on the move. But! To squeeze in that little extra work-out, I always take the stairs instead of the elevator
