My two models have kindly offered to model the appropriate and inappropriate way to wear your helmet. Amazingly, we still see this at bike races, on the bike trails, on kids, and it’s wrong! Your helmet should protect your head. It should hit the crown of your head and the straps should be properly tightened. The black clasp should go right under the ears. Sunglasses can go over or under your straps depending on your glasses.

Wendy, pictured above, also reminded me today that if you crash and there’s a crack in your helmet, then it is now trash! Never ever ride with a crack in your helmet. Yes, we know they are expensive but it’s your head!
Some manufactures MAY have a crash policy – that is that if you crash your helmet, they may be able to replace for a nominal fee- check with your brand to be sure..
The Correct Way:

The helmet is actually fitted to your head. Straps are snug against your skin. Front of the helmet covers your forehead!
Also, thinking that there is a limit on the number of wearings or the years worn with helmets?! Please chime in if you know the answer. Is it two years? Not sure, but it is not more than five.
And since we are on the topic of cycling do’s and don’ts, never never wear undies with a chamois!
HOLY COW!!
In my attempt to find out replacement policies and lifespans of helmets, I found THIS AMAZING DEAL!! For the price of one pair of high technology glasses, you can choose a new helmet, a backpack, t-shirt, and a hat. It’s called the Free Gear Project “over $250 of free gear!!!!!”
Any other cycling do’s and don’ts out there? Funny story about cycling you’d like to share? Love a particular cycling product? Share it here: inquiring minds want to know.

I have this problem with my son’s helmet. It starts out right but ends up falling back. I’m not sure if I need a bigger or smaller helmet.

When my husband, Joe, was a bit younger he was a bit more darning. I actually started to get nervous when ever he would go mountain biking with one friend, Mark. Mark was jinx. Whenver Joe would go out with Mark he would end up getting hurt, broken shoulder, road rash, etc… One time they went to Moab and of course Joe went off his bike and mostly got major road rash (he still has the scars today). I looked at his helmet because he said that he hit a rock. His head was fine but there was a small rock stuck in his helmet. If he had not been wearing one that rock would have been stuck in his head! He did go out a buy a new helmet after that.

I see your model is also demonstrating the proper “pro” way to were sunglasses – outside of the helmet straps. ;^)
