Athletes Love Greek Yogurt!

March 3rd, 2009 · 9 Comments

This is going to seem weird, but, before I started blogging, I had never heard of Greek yogurt. That was over two years ago and now I’m more in love with it than ever! Why, you might ask? Cause there is no crap in them! No sugars of any kind, no sweeteners, no artificial anything!! Greek yogurt has become a constant that is always in my fridge. In fact, I’ve even converted hubby. That is a big deal. With the addition of a yogurt/meal throughout the course of our day, we can remain fed (obviously) but also by choosing a Greek yogurt instead of a bar- we can save on calories and add fruit!

Greek yogurt can be dressed up or down. You can have it plain with fruit, nuts or granola. Or you can dress it up with Agave nectar, nuts, and granola (my usual). Although, I really need to beef up the number of servings of fruits I eat daily! You can also replace mayo with a Fage yogurt for a great low-fat alternative.

At my local grocery store, I’m only offered one choice. 0% Total Fage, 2 % Total Fage, and Fage! Before today, I had never tried any of their other flavors, and oh my, I love them all. They even have 5% Fage with a side of fruit! The sides of fruit do contain sugar, however, for a small container with fruit, the calorie size is 130 with 25 for fat. Amazingly, when I tried the full fat variety with nuts and honey, it was as good as ice cream. Rich, creamy and delicious. A very small amount of the full fat variety is plenty!

What is your favorite yogurt and why? How much of it do you eat? Anybody do anything else with Greek yogurt or have a recipe to share?

PS. And I want to thank Fage for sending me the yogurt samples, I was in love before, but, now I’m truly a loyal customer!

I go through “seasons” with yogurt. For awhile, I’ll eat it every single morning with fruit and granola. And then I won’t eat it for awhile…

I like vanilla yogurt in big cartons (as opposed to the flavored individual packs)…I can’t remember the particular brand name at the moment.

Before this post, I had never heard about Greek yogurt…but now I want to try it.

You can save a ton of money by making your own…either from scratch or by buying a big tub of plain yogurt and draining it (which is what Greek yogurt is). Take a collander and line it with paper towel, then set a sheet of plastic wrap on top of the yogurt, so that it is touching the yogurt surface. Set this on top of a bowl to catch the liquid that drains off and leave it in the fridge overnight. The next AM you will have perfect, thick, creamy Greek yogurt for a fraction of the price of the ready-prepared stuff.

it’s the only one i buy now! and while you can make regular yogurt thicker in consistency, i don’t think that will make the protein content double. (isn’t the stuff that drains out the whey (protein)? i could be wrong here…

anywho, I love it with fruit, and i’m on a mission to try using it as a base for ice cream. i like all kinds, but i usually stick to tj’s unless it’s on sale at another store. My fav is probably the icelandic brands, but they’re so much more expensive i can’t buy them that often :-/

I love Chobani Greek Yogurt. I don’t like regular yogurt so this has been great. I also like the Trader Joe’s Greek yogurt. Would love to try others though.

I use the Trader Joe’s plain greek yogurt in place of sour cream and it’s so good.

Here’s another Greek Yogurt tip. If you like Ranch Dressing for salads or veggie dip (but don’t like the fat & calories) buy a yogurt based ranch dressing (like Bolthouse Farms) then cut it even farther with plain greek yogurt. They are usually in the refrigerated section of the store.

I love Fage 2%. Sometimes I mix it with half a Dannon Light and Fit for the fruit flavor (even though it has artificial sweetener).
