Are you GO GO GO all the time? The last 8 days for us has included a trip to the mountains, trip to Palm Springs, trip to Orange County and a trip to Pasadena! Amazingly, all of these places are only one hour from our house, but, an hour is a long WAY for a kid. And these types of trips, involve meal times, and snack times for both them and me. In a huge effort to AVOID cheesy fatty tasty addicting In N Out burgers (Yes, I eat & love them), I’d like to offer some tips to help you pack for your day out! And also to ask for any of your suggestions on what/how to pack for a day trip!
Things to AVOID:
Frothy Blended Mocha type drink any flavor has 260 calories ++
Cheeseburgers and Fries 500 calories+++
Zero Nutritional Value Bagels, Muffins, Danishes –who knows?!
PLAN THE DAY AROUND WHAT AND WHEN YOU WILL EAT

Honestly, it is not easy for me to pack a picnic every single day we leave the house. It takes extra time and effort. Requires specific foods that I know I will eat and foods my kids will eat. However, this type of packing will take the pressure of what to eat when you’re hungry. And, I hate walking into a fast food joint wondering what I can eat.
The following is a list of items that I might pack:
Hard Boiled Eggs
Hummus + Veggies
Cold, Protein Pancakes
Almond Butter, Peanut Butter, Jelly, Agave Nectar
Bowl of Mixed Nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecans, cranberries) + 1/2 Cold Almond Milk for cereal
Crackers
String Cheese
Box Juices
Fruit (apples, grapes)
If you MUST eat out:
Salad with grilled chicken
Iced Tea, Coffee
Eat the insides of grilled chicken tacos
That’s it or at least all I can think of at the moment. What do you pack for your day trips? For us, anything further than half an hour is considered an outing- that may require refueling at some point! Please feel free to add anything else, as I (and our readers) would love to hear how you manage your day trips eating healthfully with your family!

love the ideas. I have eaten a lot of crap this week, due to stress and eating out. I think that when I travel I try and pack lot’s of bars, Z bars being my fave, and fruit is always a must:)

Whenever we leave the house and the drive is longer than around Gunnison I pack snacks. I mostly pack them to keep Lily busy but it helps us to not eat out as much. Since Lily is only 1 I have to pack foods for her that won’t terribly mess up the car. I pack peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, graham crackers, gold fish, soft ceral bars and bananas for Mikayla. Anything somewhat healthy that we can eat, not make a mess, and not worry about Lily chocking on.

I almost always bring snacks with us on car trips because I hate feeling all greasy and nasty from stopping to pick up something quick. Apples are my fav because I can toss them in my purse even and head out.
Oddly enough, even when I travel for work I put oatmeal and granola bars in my suitcase. Then I can have them for quick snacks when I get hungry so I don’t have to resort to the vending machine.
Eating out with D works well because we usually split meals!

I pack food up most places, and we rarely eat out, usually because I can’t find foods that aren’t greasy. I dont like fast food at all, for me or my kids, so if we do eat out we do Subway or something similar.
I always take along cheese sticks and pretzels (unsalted) or crackers and peanut butter. Love hummus and veggies as well, and any type of fruit. I always try to have some type of protein to mix with the fruit or carb.

for me with day trips I tend to just toss in extra protein knowing I can always find the carbs and fat.
grilled chicken, tuna in envelopes and a fork.

So true…it’s important (but difficult sometimes) to remember that we’re usually not working out hard enough to burn all those extra calories.
