Fit Mom’s Future Farm, Hibernating, and Food

February 9th, 2009 · 8 Comments

Ever just want to duck for cover and hide out for a while? Spent the weekend doing some rejuvenating yoga work and a little spin workout on the bike.  That’s it for me on the exercise front.  This kind of resting is good for the soul  because it will make it that much easier to go out in the garage tomorrow and HIT IT HARD.  Workout #2 starts tomorrow!  Results so far include an inch off my waist and an inch off my butt! And my bulky quads have shrunk by 1/4 inch.  Yikes, that seems like a lot (not completely sure I believe it, honestly).    And, I have not been  completely faithful on the food plan…(chocolate, sugar, are my faults), sorry Angie!

Tomato Image from Cooks Garden

(Have YET to grow a decent tomato!!)

Ever since I’ve been married, I’ve had a vegetable garden.  It’s always random, unorganized and surprising, what I actually get!  This time won’t be any different, since all my methods for identifying the vegetable is NOT showing up!!  Check out this website, CooksGarden, too, if you’re into vegetable gardening…Planning on doing a little ordering from here too.

ON THE FOOD FRONT:

THESE PANCAKES RULED!!

Standard protein pancakes with the addition of flax seed, but, garnished with bananas, and on one pancake, Naturally Nutty Mocha Peanut Butter.  Instead of syrup on the other one, I used Agave Nectar. Delicious.  Kids will eat “pancakes” in whatever form they come in and always ask for more.

NUTTY MAPLE-CINNAMON BARS

Recipe taken from the Jan/Feb 2009 issue of Clean Eating Magazine.  As usual, they taste better than they look!  It’s basically a protein bar minus the sugar.  I used 100% Whey Vanilla Protein Powder. The sweetener used is Applesauce and Maple Syrup and they are really tasty.   Snacks for the family for a week!

NEW LOVE MIXED WITH AN OLD FAVORITE

Plain Greek Yogurt Mixed with 1/2 Sambazon Pureed Acai Berry topped with a small handful of nuts or granola.  Perfect snack, no sugar or Agave required.  Sorry, no photo.  I ate it too fast!

QUESTIONS FOR YOU:

Brussel Sprouts! Need a good recipe…Twice served, twice rejected. Ideas??

i don’t really have a favorite, i’ve gone by price and gotten designer whey… but i’ll be in the market again soon

Why not serve brussel sprouts sweet? Roast them with sweet potatoes and cinnamon until caramelized and drizzle with maple syrup.

That sounds like an excellent way to cook brussel sprouts! Thanks. Was thinking they’d taste great with a little sweetness.

I roasted them with olive oil and sea salt. They were bad or anything just not all that tasty. And the family said NO WAY!!

For the brussells: couple slices of bacon, diced and fried, remove from pan, slice brussels in half, saute in about 2 tbs of evoo or the bacon fat, until browned. after they are browned throw in a little water and cover and steam until bright green and water is gone, not very long. remvoe from pan. add about 1/4-1/2 cup balsamic and reduce by about half, add a couple tablespoons butter one at a time, you get a syruppy suace, toss with the brussels and bacon bits. Great!!

My sister has a fabulous Brussel Sprout recipe (has chopped Hazelnuts). I’ll get it for you. We usually just eat them steamed, the trick is not to overcook or undercook. I like to put parmesan cheese & Smart Balance on mine when they’re hot, husband likes ketchup (ew!). I love them roasted too – I follow the Barefoot Contessa recipe with Kosher salt and Olive Oil until they’re really crispy tossing the pan often.
