How many of you triathlete’s, runner’s and outdoor enthusiasts struggle with effective skincare products? I AM totally raising my hand. On an average day, I spend upwards of three hours in the sun per day. This type of exposure requires daily sunscreen, a really great moisturizer, chapsticks with sunscreen as well as some rejuvenating types of products for after the event. My good friend, Tammy, is a huge beauty queen addict and I asked her, could she recommend any skincare products for athletes? Her answer was No. Our needs are different. We need high quality skincare products for our specific needs- tons of time spent outdoors, sore and tired muscles, dry cracked skin, the list goes on….
Introducing Mission Products founded by Charlie Engle who needed skincare and pain relief for his ultra endurance events. (USA Today story about Engle’s run across the Sahara here) Mission was engineered for athletes and field tested by some highly competitive athletes! In fact some of my favorite women athlete’s such as Mia Hamm and Amanda Beard are actual partners in the company!
On an interesting note, each athlete has a charity that they are passionate about and Mission Products supports each one by donating a portion of their proceeds to their specific charity.
These products have recently been featured in Her Sports and Fitness, Self Magazine and Seventeen Magazine.
The Mission Daily Offense SPF 30 is paraben free, preservative free, and offers UVA and UVB protection. I like how easy it is to apply, the fact that there is no scent, my skin does not feel greasy and it lasts a really long time. The tube is really small so it’d be great in your jersey pocket for easy reapplication. My kids didn’t complain either since I wasn’t putting my hands all over them! Just smearing a stick all around their ears and face on snow days is a bit easier than a cream based sunscreen.

The Foot Synergy Gel was actually my favorite product. Designed to be used on your feet after a hard workout to soothe, reduce inflammation, pain and/ or swelling. I love the smell of sweet almond oil, safflower oil and aloe vera. I used it on my achy knees as well as my feet and it has a wonderful soothing feeling to it.

The After-Sun Revive Gel is designed to moisturize your skin post-exercise. After a full day of skiing, surfing or running, your skin will feel dry and be begging for some moisture- and this product has all that and more. At first the word “gel” through me for a loop because I’m used to cream based moisturizers- but the gel works better than a lotion and you need a lot less of it. It can be used on your legs as an after -shave gel or anywhere where you need extra moisture. It does leave a bit of a sticky feeling on my hands but it certainly will do it’s job! Revive!

Lips need as much or more protection from the sun as the rest of your skin and as an athlete, I’ve never seen any lip protector with SPF 20! There is bit of a scent to it but it’s very mild. My husband was reminded of cookies (scent of vanilla extract) when asked to describe the scent. It’s a very soothing, moisturizing, lip gloss that has SPF 20!

Every athlete from a short distance runner to a triathlete to a cyclist have problems with chafing. On our long runs last summer, I always came home with a chaf wound. They really stink! On those long runs, I made a habit of applying body glide to any possible chaffing area, but since I’m not training for a marathon right now I haven’t had a reason to try it. But, even on long cycling rides, chaffing can happen in unpleasant areas- and this cream is worth a try! There is no sticky residue, goes on smoothly and leaves no unpleasant odors.

This is a wonderful topic to write on – I don’t often have a need for these products in my running, except for sunscreen. I do find Body Glide to be a very effective product in eliminating chaffing. A number of my friends also use Arbonne products as well.

Hmm. $3.99 for a lip balm. $39 for the kit. Instead:
Buy bag balm, chap stick and banana boat. Save $ 25 . Donate $ 20 to favorite charity. Put $5 in a drawer. In today’s economy one must be frugal. As upper middle class, our jobs will be scarce, perhaps extinct. Frivolity is passe .Just being Real Tim.
