We are big heart rate users over here…I rarely workout without one. I have certain zones that I have set for myself and I listen to my body. Typically, an easy cardio ride would keep my heart rate around 150 beats per minute. Intervals, my heart rate will be in the 170′s. And, at the end of a race or ride when I’m nearing the “I’m going to puke zone!”, I can hit 190. This is just my body. The calculations for the heart rate monitors are not always equal to what I can do but, if you want to know the old formula (may not be accurate anymore) is 220-your age. Then, take that number and find the percentages such as 60%, 70% and so forth. Here is an article I wrote almost a year ago on training with a heart rate monitor (link). I also posed this question on Twitter and found some amazing information out there. From what I understand, a lot of the endurance coaches are uses zone training (zone 1-5) and the zones have been determined by tests that you perform.
At any rate….

ActiveEKG measures the electrical signals on your skin in the same manner that an EKG or electrocardiogram does. You need to do weight-bearing exercises for the sake of your bones! Swimming is great for the body and easy on the joints, but does nothing for building up your bone density!

well well, let me pull from the depths of my brain some beautiful piece of advice that will help millions…err…ummm…ok I know this has been said before but I have proven it works on a couple of friends. When you’re tired and working out just sounds like the last thing on Earth you even have the energy to do, just get dressed and say you’ll do it for 10 minutes. I mean you can do anything for 10 minutes right? That’s usually enough to get you feeling a little better and you’ll keep going!

Make sure that you arrange to workout first thing in the morning. It will set you out feeling good for the rest of the day. You won’t have things popping up all day to keep you from doing it. And you won’t wind up at the end of the day, too tired to do it. Let it be one thing you do for yourself, no matter what else has to be postponed.

A little bit of weight training (muscle building) will go a long way to burning calories. Aerobic (running, walking, swimming, etc.) will burn calories while you’re doing it, but something as simple as squats or push-ups or leg lifts will build muscle, which burns more calries all day long….Thanks…I’m going to enjoy reading all the tips above!

I am a working Mom so getting in a workout can be really hard. My husband is a great help and gets the kids breakfast so that I can get a workout in early in the morning. I use my breaks at work for a walk around the block. I have an hour for lunch, so I eat my lunch, then go for a 30 minute walk then. I am now done 25 pounds, with 30 more to go. The heart rate monitor would sure be a great help for my morning workout.
46 Tiffany // Dec 15, 2008 at 2:15 am
Take my name out of the hat on this one – I don’t need a heart rate monitor. I just wanted to say that I have been using mine more and more. 155ish is for my long slow runs and 165ish is when I am really pushing it.
Since you are the gear queen – what kind of gear would you recommend for the super cold. I have been wearing two layers and it is not enough. I went out for 8 miles today but only did 6 because I was too cold to finish (if I had been closer to home I would have ended sooner.)

I recommend getting up to exercise before the kids wake up, because once they are awake the day can get away from you and you end up too tired to work out.
79 David Bertolo // Dec 16, 2008 at 12:49 am
Depending on your age, level of conditioning, and your fitness goals, you should train in a particular heart-rate zone. Beginners should try to elevate their heart rate to 50%-60% of their maximum while intermediates and advanced should shoot for 70%-85% of their max. The higher your heart rate, the more calories you will burn and the more fit you can become. To figure your maximum heart rate, simply subtract your age from 220. For example, if you’re 30 years old, you would have a maximum heart rate of 190. To work at 70% of your maximum heart rate, you would shoot for a heart rate of approximately 133 beats per minute (0.7 x 190). You can also count bpm (beats per minute) in 10-second increments and then multiply by six.

When I am just not feeling the gym, I bring some good magazines and do 35-45 minutes either walking on an incline (7-10) or use the elliptical. I found the local library to be great for magazines (since people at my gym don’t like to share and choose to steal the ones available….grrr…). I organize the songs on my iPod by BPM. When I first start my cardio workout, I use medium slow, about 120-130bpm. I then work up to fast, usually 140-150 bpm. Then I cool down with medium slow again. I pump iron to slow but vigorous (lots of percussion) music. And I stretch to slow soft music. Makes the workout a lot of fun!

Get enough sleep to feel good during all waking hours. If you feel good, you’ll eat healthier and if you feel good and have energy, you are more likely to exercise.

Keep moving! It doesn’t have to be fast and hard but it does have to be at least 30 minutes a day. Anyone can walk (even if it’s on a treadmill). Or get a Dance Fitness DVD and dance. Keep moving! By the way – great giveaway!

Start with small goals and don’t quit because of setbacks. Also find fun activities you like to do so you’ll stay motivated.

I take the dog for a very long walk every day. It keeps me fit and keeps him well behaved.

I need to have music when I do my walking to keep a good rhythm, and whenever I run errands, I park as far as possible from the store, and if grocery shopping with a cart, shop at a really fast pace!

After work I try to walk with my youngest daughter, so we can both exercise together and spend time with each other.

Switching up what I do and not allowing myself to get in a rut (as opposed to routine) – some days walk/run, some days hit the gym, some days my strange version of yoga (which usually turns into meditation). Remembering I am doing this to feel and look good and it’s really not torture. Really(!)
I also find keeping an exercise journal to be effective – the act of simply writing down what I did and for how long solidifies things and the accomplishment.

Don’t let plateaus get you down. They’re normal and happen to everyone. Just change up your routine and find a really exciting and challenging new exercise to do!

Incorporate exercise into your life. Park at the far end of the parking lot, take the stairs instead of the elevator. Little things like this help burn more calories.

Don’t skip a day without some form of exercise. You can find a way to spend 20 or 30 minutes exercising doing every day tasks along the way.

I heard this one somewhere. If you have a house with stairs, only carry one item at a time up the stairs. As long as you keep a clean house, and if you have kids, you’ll be making lots of trips up and down the stairs every day.

i’ve noticed instead of going on a diet, i have made a whole lifestyle change and it works wonders! you don’t lose weight as fast but it’s a way of keeping it off for a lifetime!

Don’t overdo it when you’re just starting out. You might hurt yourself and hurt your enthusiasm.

There are so many good tips available that virtually anyone can get positive results, but MY favorite fitness tip is our triplets – I get strength, endurance, cardio, you-name-it… and I still squeeze in time for the gym (where else can I read a book?)

Icy cold water is really more refreshing than coffee. It helped me kick the caffeine dependence! No withdrawal headaches = better running!

Fitness tip! Give your muscles a break! If you work out the arms on Monday, don’t work them again until at least Wednesday.
136 Sarah // Dec 19, 2008 at 9:56 pm
With three young children, finding time for exercise can be a challenge. I try to squeeze in a little any way I can – take the stairs, park farther from the store and walk, etc.

Find a workout you enjoy doing so that you’ll *want* to stay with it, and don’t start out too fast so that you get sore and don’t want to continue working out.
Thanks for the contest!

Walking is the key, all seasons or indoors, or find music… or a friend to walk in place…amazing because you will enhance your senses too. Try to walk every possible day, and you’ll see stamina increase, energy improves and you’ll have fun! Only requirement is perseverance, check off each day as you go, to inspire yourself.
