Must Reads for Athletes

December 9th, 2008 · 2 Comments

A good book will be livelong lesson for you (and me). I am an avid 15 minute reader daily!! Unless, I get engrossed in a fictional novel then it is all night every night until it’s finished. Not good for my daytime hours, but, still great to get hooked into a book! Here is a link to an old post about my absolute favorite books for athletes, and I’d like to add to that list here. The athlete in your life would certainly enjoy any of these books.

Running the Spiritual Path by Roger Joslin. The author is an avid runner but he also uses running to get closer to God. It’s about turning running into a spiritual journey.

If you are a heavy IPOD user, then, this is not the book for you! However, if when you are out running and would like to learn new ways to mediate while running, then I recommend it. I have been reading it steadily for several months and I’ve really enjoyed all the different ways he uses to pray while running. His meaning for prayer is to come closer to whatever higher power you believe in. He seems to have researched many methods of meditation and shares how he works on it while running. He teaches you how to quiet the daily thoughts and to train your mind on the mantra and on breathing. He uses a variety of techniques from mantras, to chants to finger mediation (like rosary beads). These are great ways to teach yourself how to focus. I’ve particularly enjoyed how he would pray like the ancient indians used running as prayer. I also enjoyed the descriptions of all the trails he runs in Texas. It’s been an interesting, learning experience for me and it is one that I would come back to to reread parts.

Strength for Life by Shawn Phillips. I previously reviewed this book here. And I’d like to add that I am currently carrying it to the gym daily and am attempting to follow the strength portion of the book. Program is simple, clear and great for a first time weight lifter.

The Athlete’s Guide to Yoga by Sage Rountree.

Coast to Coast by Ryan Pancoast. (on my wish list and came highly recommended)

Forget Me Not by Jennifer Lowe-Anker. (on my wish list and came highly recommended)

From Landis to Lance by David Walsh

The Yellow Jersey by Ralph Hurne

Mental Training for Peak Performance by Steve Ungerleider

Please refer to this post for the other fantastic list of books that I’ve loved and passed on. Add your favorite book, as well! I would love to here about it.

Great stuff Rachel – I especially want to check out “Running the Spiritual Path”. A couple of books I like:
Weight Training: “New Rules of Lifting” and “New Rules of Lifting for Women” – both by Alwyn Cosgrove and Lou Schuler. Both my wife and I use these books. They are an easy read, plus have many workout routines in to f0llow. Excellent stuff!
Other: “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hil, and “It’s Not About the Bike” by Lance Armstrong.

Thanks for sharing your list Rachel!
