Athletic dreams: who has them?

December 3rd, 2008 · 7 Comments

Do you get excited when the mail comes? I do! Always looking for the next issue of my favorite magazines. Love the glossy covers, I devour the articles, study the ads..Most of my magazines are very well loved before I recycle. My current favs are Runner’s World, Trail Runner, Clean Eating, La Cucina Italiana, Women’s Adventure and Yoga Journal. I know that’s a lot. Bit embarrassing, I suppose, but I read it all. It may take me all month, but, I do it. Magazines keep me dreaming, I suppose.

In another life, I was an endurance athlete. In this life, I am an endurance athlete. I’m the one who volunteers to do cross country skiing with a baby strapped to me rather than ski downhill, EVER! (serious, got pictures, too). I really do get excited about competing. In anything. If I had access to a gym where there was Kettlebell competitions, I would probably be excited about that. There is such a thing, right? If I had the time and money, I’d do lots of different competitive things. Would love to focus on rock climbing, swimming, obviously yoga, too and maybe even an Ironman. But, at this time in my life, time is at a premium!

There is an endurance race coming up in 2009 in Big Bear for Snow Shoeing! This is only an hour away and although, I have ZERO experience and there is barely ever any snow here (NEVER in my town) I’m still considering doing it. That would be right up my endurance avenue!! No, I don’t have any snow shoes and no, I don’t know how I could train for this, but, still, it’s fun to dream, right?

Do you have any hidden talents or competitive events that you WOULD LOVE TO TRY?

there’s plenty of snow easily accessible in so. california. idylwild, glendora, angeles crest, wrightwood…the list goes on and on. do a quick google for snowshoe rentals and you’ll find them at most of the trail heads where you’ll find snow this winter. i have a really nice pair of atlas snowshoes that i use and i love them…although, i’d get a running pair of snowshoes if i was going to race. rent first and try out the brands; you’ll find what works for you that way.

from what i hear, too, the big bear race is a blast and it sounds like it’s right up your alley.

as far as athletic dreams? i’d love to try some multi-day adventure racing or stage trail races [like route of fire in costa rica].

    One word – Boston.

My dream one day is to do the Ironman in Hawaii – boy that would be awesome!

Go for the snow shoeing – it is not hard and really does not take experience or practice. It is easy (well unless you are trying to go through 5 feet of power!)

I remember one time cross country skiing with the dogs and I had to break trail in very deep snow. The dogs refused to go in front of me and break trail for me, they stayed right behind me the whole time.

I’m ready to tackle Mt. Whitney again, and go all the way. I’ve been twice with my dad, and the first time there was an unseasonal ice storm that prevented us from going all the way to the top. The second time, my dad got sick by the time we reached base camp, and had to come down the next morning.

Mt. Whitney… I’ll get you, my pretty.

Jeff- yes there is snow in so. cal but none yet. As far as me entering that race w/ zero experience is iffy though. Wondering when /how I could train for such a thing.

Lori- Ugg, how frustrating for you. I did it with my dad too. We did it one day up and back. Backpacking passes are hard to come by.

Jackie- YES, BOSTON is on my LIST. Planning on 2010.

Tiff- Thanks. I will plan on trying it.

I’m trying to get a race out in Redland to provide a free entry as one of the HBBC prizes, that would be perfect for you!!

I’ve never snow shoed but I would love to learn to!
