Inspiring story: The Oiselle Girls Running Team

November 26th, 2008 · 2 Comments

The Oiselle girls…getting ready to throw down. After winning their Association meet, and placing second at Regionals, they have secured one of the coveted top 3 team spots, and are headed to next month’s USATF National Jr. Olympic XC Championships in Virginia

Sometimes great things happen when you least expect it.

And in August of this year, we certainly weren’t expecting to coach and sponsor a cross country team of 11 & 12 year old girls. But when a parent asked, it seemed the perfect opportunity…to give back to the sport we love, to help a group of girls test their skills and become a team, and to see if they could qualify for the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships in Virginia on 12/13.

Three months and many workouts later, we are incredibly proud and honored to report that these girls WON their Association meet at Woodland Park in Seattle on 11/15. And on Saturday, 11/22, they placed SECOND in our Regional meet which draws all the best teams from the Pacific Northwest. Only the top three teams advance to Nationals, and so they have achieved their goal of qualifying. To our runners and their families, we send huge and heartfelt congratulations!

For Oiselle, this experience simply confirmed that we’re in the right place. And that we will continue to support youth running — with the understanding that it helps build strength and confidence in young girls. It also means that we will be exploring the expansion of our apparel line (beginning with Fall 09) to include shorts, tops, and tights for girls, ages 6-12. An increasingly active youth market tells us the time is right (as do some of our running store partners). And we want even the smallest runner to feel good about reaching for big goals.

Wishing everyone a peaceful Fall and holiday season!
