An active vacation with the family

November 18th, 2008 · 5 Comments

We never leave home without our bikes!  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve hauled my bike across an airport or paid an extra $50 for the extra large luggage!

All of our family trips involve bicycles and now that my children are at an age where they can bike too, it makes packing and traveling that much more exciting!  Or should I say that the distance we travel is a fraction of past trips, but the gear we haul, has quadrulpled!  One website that we’ve used frequently is VRBO (Vacation Rental by Owner).  After we decide on the city (or the distance we are willing to travel), I start searching this site for houses to rent in the area.  And, I keep clicking till I find the number of bedrooms and the PRICE (cheap) that we are willing to pay.  This weekend we ended up in Big Bear which is only an hour drive to the mountains but massively different from our normal life down here in the smog (and fire) valley.

Our trip wasn’t without it’s problems though none had anything to do with the city or house we rented.  On leaving town, hubby had a 100 degree temperature and Benjamin had stayed home from school due to symptoms of strep throat.  Then, on the way up, BOTH kids puked in the car- within 15 minutes of each other!  What’s up with that?!!  Saturday was spent in rehab basically so little fun was had.   I’d like to add that since we rent a house, it makes cooking meals and eating clean food- much easier.  Towns such as this seem to thrive on people coming up for the weekend, jack up the prices in the resturants for only mediocre food.  Lesson learned: plan to make all meals at home with the exception of one.

However, the rest of the weekend involved hiking or biking or watching airplanes land and several great movies (loved ELF and NIM Island. But, I did. not. love. The Break Up.)

Scenes from the trip:

Cruising after the big trail ride..

The bear brothers in their PJ’s.

Learning to stand and pedal wearing Daddy’s gloves.

A big hike to the lake with brand new telescopes to look at birds.  Ryan is happy to be wearing his SpiderMan hat!

Oh, yeah… puking in the car… gotta love it…

Cute pictures! I was kind of hoping once all my kids surpassed age 5 that the gear would decrease, but I can see where that will not be the case… a good thing, though.

Wow–I think I would have U-turned after the first puke! The trip planning was inspirational (I’m a big fan of home rental too for all the same reasons) but your perseverance rocks!

despite the puking (ack!), it sounds like you had a fun weekend. I love the fact that you are all so active together, what a great example you both have set for your boys. :)

Sounds like a great trip…except for the puking, of course.
