Yes, you know I am seriously into protein and protein powders. I’ve made a big effort to get myself educated on protein powders and what makes a good one. I won’t bore you with the details again- but the bottom line will remain to be FEWEST ingredients, HIGH quality protein, no artificial flavors or sweeteners. When I was contacted to sample the Tight Curves Protein Powder made specifically for women, I jumped at the chance.
Again, since I must live under a rock, I had never heard of Kristal Richardson before. She is the model athlete for this product. Her workout routine is ridiculous (2 hours of cardio a day, 7 days a week, plus weight training 5-6 days a week!) Check it out here. Seems a bit excessive to me. But, I don’t have a body like hers and maybe I never will. Doesn’t seem that important to me to do all that to look like that.
The Tight Curves Protein Powder has 14 grams of soy protein isolate, 0 grams of sugar, and has been supplemented with Black Cohosh and St. John’s Wart. Black Cohosh is meant to alleviate symptoms in menopausal women and help maintain even mood swings. You can check the ingredients out here. At this point, I do not feel equipped to make a judgment about the science of the product. I can tell you that it has a very apparent aftertaste and I’m not all that impressed with the ingredients “natural and artificial flavors” and “sucralose”. I’m also questioning the need for a protein powder specifically for women. Isn’t our protein needs based on our activity levels and our daily diet?
You be the judge. Do women need a protein powder that has been supplemented with herbs for menopause?

Do they need it? No.
Will it sell? Yes.

My bad–I confused Kristal Richardson w/Jennifer Nicole Lee before! Regardless, I agree with previous poster that it will sell–in large part to its spokesperson. Personally, I take protein supplements for just that–protein. When I need something more due to aging or medical issues, I would think I would go with my doctor’s recommendation based on where I needed a specific boost in my levels. Make sense? Good post..

I’m right there with you on wanting a protein that isn’t full of artificial things or too many extra sugars.
If the ingredients really do make a difference for women, then I have no problem with a gender-specific protein. But if it’s purely marketing mumbo-jumbo… that’s sad. But those things sell because many people don’t care enough to look into what they’re consuming!
I don’t feel like their website is designed very well, I wanted to see a list of the nutrition panel, ingredients, etc. Oh… and I don’t like the name ‘Tight Curves’.
It’s not like the only reason to work out and watch what you consume is appearances.

I’ve seen several women have bad reactions to soy protein isolate and its estrogen effects. It’s something I specifically avoid when looking at ingredient lists. Whole soy foods don’t usually cause any problems, but big doses of soy protein isolate several times a day can cause crazy hormonal issues such as bloating, breast tenderness, hot flashes, mood swings and weight gain.
A woman on one of my fitness groups was having such weird symptoms while using soy protein isolate, she thought she was pregnant. Her doctor (after ruling out pregnancy) told her to stop using soy protein powder and all of the symptoms subsided.
Experiences like that make me wary of “girl” protein with lots of soy and random herbs. St. John’s Wort can interfere with the effectiveness of birth control pills, for example. I would definitely pass.

Thanks! I was on the look-out for a new protein shake (haven’t been loving my current shake lately) and this sounds interesting!

I’ve heard about women-specific protein powders, but I very highly doubt I’d ever bother with one (unless it was given to me for free or something). I’m drinking protein shakes for the protein, after all…
