Introducing Gracie’s Gear and the Power Pouch

August 20th, 2008 · 170 Comments

I love to meet, see, or find new products that are exactly what I need in my athletic life and I’m assuming YOURS too! Last weekend, I was worried about being hungry on my long run, so I carried an extra gel in my jog bra. Right next to my skin. Of course, I didn’t need it and ended up carrying it home in my hand. This was after it had chaffed my skin so bad that it left train tracks on my chest. Lovely.

In comes, Gracie’s Gear! I’m so excited about these bras, that I was just jumping for joy. Perfectly held my boobs in place but had a large pocket in the front to hold a gel, an IPOD or even a blackberry, if necessary. There is a long bra top and a short bra top both have pockets in them called the Power Pouch. The Power Pouch has three compartments within the one pocket that sits outside the actual bra for all of your workout necessities. The long bra top is also awesome because of the length. It’s long enough to cover any assets you might have or NOT and still cover the waistbands of your shorts, running skirt or running knickers. These are awesome, readers. Why didn’t I think of this? Also, for a jog bra, they are only $38 which I think is reasonable when you consider the cost of a name brand bra will run you $50!

Gracie herself is an incredibly driven, motivated successful business owner and running coach. I’m thrilled that she had the time to answer my questions.

I had a passion to reach as many women as possible through my knowledge in exercise and my functional gear. I believe that when you find your passion you can empower others and be successful.
Yes….when I first launched Gracie’s gear, my father was diagnosed with cancer, we lost my uncle and his son of cancer, and I found out I was pregnant. Working at Duke as their Fitness Manager to over 30,000 employees, I traveled the country on my vacation time (preggos) and sold my gear….after Daylin was born I decided that it was time to focus on the company and stay home with Daylin, At 17 months she has traveled to 20 states…Can you believe?? Hilarious! She is amazing.

The question is, where do I find the time to run?? Well, I have competed in 2 marathons since Day with training only 2-3 days a week. The other days I will strength train with my body weight and walk. I truly believe when it comes to running, it is quality and not quantity. With a proper 3 day a week training program, busy moms can be successful in running. I will start training for Boston in December so right now I focus my efforts on others…new runners to those trying to qualify for Boston. I bring Daylin to most of my training runs or coaching sessions. That is always my agreement with my clients…my daughter may join us :) She is a great distraction. The secret to that is running or walking with your child at an early age and they will learn that this is part of the day.

I don’t participate in other sports right now because of my schedule…we travel 2 weeks out of every month…my husband comes when he can and my mom travels most of the time with us.
My advice on race day….if you have done all the work to prepare, the race should be successful as long as you put forth 100%! Unfortunately 100% may be harder on some days than others. Every race is a learning experience and always write down how you felt, etc…so you can look back and see what might have caused the bad race or the good race. This will help prepare for next time!

JUST FOR YOU:

One wonderful reader will win a jog bra of their choice from Gracie’s Gear and Training! Simply post a comment about what YOU USE TO MOTIVATE YOURSELF to exercise or WHAT YOU SAY TO YOURSELF when you’re running (or working out) and you will be entered to win. A winner will be chosen at Random on August 29th at 9PST.

My motivation for working out comes mainly from my desire to be the best example I can be for my child. I love to show him that (even moms and dads) can participate in FUN physical activities that are an important part of a healthy lifestyle.

Another motivating factor is that I am a nurse. I do not feel it is right for me to educate and encourage my patients to do things I am not willing to do myself.

    Thanks!

I use our vacations to motivate me. And yes, I do talk to myself as I workout, if I start to slack off and don’t feel like I can keep going, I just keep reminding myself that I will be in a bathing suit on the beach in Jamaica. It keeps me motivated.

Thanks for the chance to enter.

Wow – those are fabulous bras! Brilliant. What motivates me to exercise is knowing that burning those calories means I can eat my beloved little chocolate! ;)

  • 5 Karyn // Aug 20, 2008 at 2:28 pm

Much of my motivation to keep running can be summed up in this quote:
“Pain is nothing compared to what it feels like to quit.”

I keep going so that I can DO things, be healthy and be ready to set a good example for my family in the future. Plus, I just like seeing how much I can push myself beyond what I ever thought I could do.

Thoughts while running: think about it one mile at a time “It’s just one mile, anyone can do something once!”

Thanks! I love your blog! So glad I found it!

I’m motivated to run because it makes me feel better. On tough days I remind myself that I keep at it so I am healthy and set a good example for my kids.

It’s also a race with myself. Will I go faster than before? Farther? Etc… I’m my own best competition!

I stay motivated by the tingly feeling I get in my joints/muscles… It sounds weird, but when I know I’m working hard enough to get that (it’s not painful) I know I am probably doing good, and burning calories, toning/strengthing m muscles. I have great music on my ipod that keep me pumped up too. It’s working, I’m down 60 pounds since Aug 07~. Now to firm up on my abs!!!

Five years ago, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The day I was diagnosed, the doctor said, “Of course, you know obesity can lead to cancer.” This was the first I had heard of that! Fine time to tell me! I spent the rest of the year going through surgery, chemo and radiation. By the time I finished chemo, I’d lost 65 pounds. When I finally got my sense of taste back, I said “I am not regaining that!” I have been dieting. I am also exercising more. Whenever I get discouraged, I look at old pictures and remind myself – “Chemo stinks! I never want to have to go through that again!”

When I work out I keep track of the kms or the time I’ve done. I always look at the next interval of time (e.g. 30 minutes, 45 minutes etc.) and tell myself “You can do it!” Next time I check my time or kms I am often over and beyond what I set out to do. In this case, I set a new goal for the next interval and tell myself the same thing. Thanks! :)

I have a new motivation as of this weekend. I was honored to walk across stage at my annual convention. The pictures my friends took really made me realize what I’ve have and haven’t done to keep myself healthy. I now have that picture of myself on my corkboard, my bathroom, mirror and in my car. Next year WHEN I walk across that stage again I want people to wonder why they don’t recognize me. It WILL be because I’ve lost enough weight to be show stopping!!

  • 48 Rachel // Aug 21, 2008 at 10:14 pm

When I’m out running I am my own motivation. I constantly am talking to myself, telling myself just to go a little bit farther. I know the farther out I go for a run, the farther I have to come back later, which is good for me in the long run. I also play little games with myself, like trying to outrun the cars in my subdivision or sprinting to the sprinkler in the neighbors yard a new houses down.

I’m motivated by my team. I am currently training for a marathon with Team in Training (raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society), and just knowing that there are others out there who benefit from the miles I run and the money I raise makes it all worth it. When I feel like hitting the snooze button on my alarm clock for my AM run, I think of all the patients fighting cancer that wish they could hit the snooze button on their illness.

My 13 year old just made the color guard squad at the High School. She has really been working hard to keep up with the “high schoolers”, she has inspired me to get in shape, so that I can keep up with her. Every evening that she goes to colorguard practice, I have headed over to the high school to walk the track, I look across the football practice field and see her out that, and it keeps me going. Just this week, I began jogging. Watching her doing something she is truly enjoying, keeps me going every night when I think I don’t want to do this. If she can go to practice every day, I can spend some time getting my self into better shape. Ten pounds down, 40 to go. This “bra” to put my IPOD in would sure help.

If I’m struggling while during a workout, I remind myself that my body is totally loving what I’m doing even when my mind isn’t. I’ve also been known to think “work out for the glory of God” because that’s how I try to run everything else in my life.

WHAT YOU USE TO MOTIVATE YOURSELF: The prospect of having a child and being off medication.

WHAT YOU SAY TO YOURSELF: You are worth this and you CAN do this.

I have been using my wii fit to help me loose wieght. Having it keep track of my BMI, weight, and how often I work out is awesome.

I have lost 3 sizes over the last year. I have learned to eat a healthy lifestyle, and increase my activity. We will be adding on to our bedroom upstairs, starting this week. We’re putting a fitness room and bath. I’m so excited!!!!!!! I work out better if my equipment is in my bedroom, where no one sees me. I do tell myself that I’m on a roll of a healthier me. I still have 50 lbs to lose. I stopped setting goals of when I will reach it. I will get there just a matter of time. Loved the purple tank in long. Please enter me, thank you

I just got a new dog, she is my motiviation to get out and get moving. She loves to go for a walk and strut her stuff around the neighborhood. She and I are having a great time getting out every evening. I am enjoying the time outside and visitiing with the neighbors. ( And losing 5 pounds so far in the first 3 weeks, hasn’t been half bad)

  • 104 Heather // Aug 25, 2008 at 3:55 pm

My motivation is losing weight and staying healthy at the moment.

Typically when I run I just listen to my breaths in an out and it entrances me so I don’t think about that pain in my foot, or the burn in my lungs.

I always play music while I am running. So I am always singing as I run. The music also helps keep me motivated.
Thank you so very much for offering this wonderful giveaway.

Being healthy for my family is what motivates me!

  • 136 joanna smith // Aug 28, 2008 at 11:41 pm

Confidence and pride is what motivates me each and every day to exercise and workout. I take great pride in taking care of myself and I enjoy reaping the benefits of my hard work. When I feel and look my personal best it gives me strength and confidence. I enjoy always putting my best foot forward in all that I do and that includes my body and how I feel about it. I remind myself of that when I start to think, well maybe I will skip working out today, and I focus on what my personal goals are. Also, I always buy clothes that either fit me perfectly or may be slightly small on me, that way I have to stay in shape in order to continue wearing them. I don’t have the extra money to purchase new clothes if I were to gain weight or body fat, so I am committed to my workout regime.
