A bicycle adventure through the woods, canyons and pastures

My famous riding buddy, Penny Davidson Lungren (two time U.S. National Champion, journalist and race commentator for ESPN) and I (little me),  took our four kids on a seriously fun adventure today that I just have to share with you. I should clarify that my town is home to a vibrant cycling community and I am really lucky to have Penny as a friend. She spent seven years as a professional cyclist traveling the world and racing her bike. She now has two kids (4 and 1 1/2) and we regularly take them on bicycle adventures. Today, was no exception, the annual Redlands Bicycle Classic is happening right now and we made it our business to ride to the KING OF THE MOUNTAIN hilltop finish. It was a great place to hang out since there was a fabulous park for the kids to play and then she and I took turns running over to the race course to watch the women or the men race. The rider who finishes at the top of the KOM gets points (extra).  The race today consisted of four laps for the women and five for the men.  The first rider to the top of the KOM earns points towards the overall competition as well as a jersey- called the King of the Mountain jersey.  It’s a hilltop finish.  Penny and I each rode with our DOUBLE trailers, lunch and kids to the top of the KOM.  Between my kids, the trailer and lunch I was easily hauling 100 pounds up this massive hill!

Yikes, all I can say is Thank God for the granny gears!!
