Skiing with the family

February 22nd, 2008 · 2 Comments

Cross-country skiing is one of my all time favorite things to do. In sunny California, we get great packed powder (12-18 inches) for 1-2 months per year. It’s a serious calorie burning experience… something like 500 calories an hour! Nordic skiing is great for people who love to exercise outdoors but don’t like to downhill ski! My version of downhill resembles a snowplow. Cortina D’Ampezzo, Italy is famous for their ski slopes – I, however, am best at drinking Capuccino’s in the lodge after every hour and 15 minute snowplow down the Italian version of the “novice run”. Nordic skiing offers a great all around body workout in a short amount of time. 2-3 hours of skiing and you can eat anything you want.

We took the kids skiing for the first time on Monday and all had a BLAST. Rim Nordic, Running Springs, California is a secret. Shhh…my neighbors had never heard of it! While all those crazy people were downhill skiing on fake snow- six families were having a blissful skiing experience at Rim Nordic which is right across the street! Unbelievable!

My children are 4 and almost 2. Benjamin got to go around the small loop twice- once with mom and once with dad. Ryan did an abbreviated loop but got better with practice! Mom learned how to balance, ski and carry Ryan. We all enjoyed our Owater and sandwiches at snack time!

“Hold the pole, Ryan!”

how cute! and I’m so jealous that you appear to be skiing in fairly warm weather! Can you send some of that sunshine my way?
