Women need to weight train. It’s a fact. I’ve written about it here. There is copious amounts of research to back it up, too. I met Julie online after browsing the Well Mom website and I loved her video. She has a bubbly personality with a great sense of humor – but gets her point across. She is an ACE certified Personal Trainer and works out of several gyms in Los Angeles. Her website is JulieBFit. Check it out!
Tell me how you got started on this quest for women to weight train.
I have three kids and I had them in 3 1/2 years! For my first pregnancy, I gained 50 pounds and after that I gained less, however, after all that, I looked in the mirror and said “Oh My God- I cannot go around looking like this”. I made a commitment to change my lifestyle, hired a personal trainer, and lost 40 pounds in 11 months. At that point, I really decided to make this my life’s passion. I’d had such great success with weight training, that I wanted to help others find the same results.
What’s your favorite exercise?
I like to combine exercises that work multiple muscle groups at a time. This one is called “Chest Fly on the Bench”. Lie on your back on a bench, holding a dumbbell in each hand, at your chest level with your hands together. You are going to open and close your hands in a “fly” while lowering one foot at a time to touch the floor. This exercise will work all your upper body- and your core at the same time.
What is your preferred breakfast food?
Oatmeal with cranberries and walnuts!
What is your training schedule like?
Each week, I will do four weight training workouts and 5 cardiovascular workouts for one hour each. Most of the time, I’ll do my cardio workouts in the gym, but I enjoy rollerblading and running as well.
What have you found to be the best motivator to get a client off the couch?
First of all, I teach my clients that this is a lifestyle change. There are no quick fixes to weight loss. When I first started exercising, I had no changes at all for 2 1/2 months. I’ve also found that great workout music, stylish workout apparel, and setting small realistic goals have really worked for my clients.

Thanks for the cool little interview. Too often we will see a book in the store and have no idea what the writer of the book is like.
Nine workouts a week is very ambitious. Good for her.
