CONTEST/GIVEAWAY
I have been on a hunt for a healthy snack bar that does NOT contain any added sugar. High Fructose Corn Syrup, Corn Syrup, Brown Rice Syrup, Evaporated Cane Juice are all forms of added sugar. These ingredients do not improve my ability to lose those last ten pounds of fat. Read the whole article! Hidden surprise at the end…
Sarah McDowell, National Marketing Director, of Larabar shared with me the story of Larabar.
Larabar started 7 years ago when the founder, Lara Merriken, went on a hike in the Rocky Mountains and wanted a healthy snack bar made of wholesome ingredients. At the time, there were no organic food bars on the market. With a Cuisinart and a rolling pin, she created a bar that focused on 100% fruits, nuts, and spices. She launched her company with five bars, making the first 500 by hand in 2003.
How has Larabar changed in the last few years?
In the last five years, Larabar has expanded from 5 bars to 16 bars. Jocolat has 4 flavors and Larabar has 12. All the bars are 100% organic, unprocessed, not baked, spice, nuts and fruit. The number of ingredients in the product go from 3 to 7! The most popular flavor, Cherry Pie has only three ingredients: dates, almonds, and unsweetened cherries.

Tell me about Jocolat.
Our brand new line of bars is called Jocolat. There are four flavors; Chocolate, Chocolate Coffee, Chocolate Mint, and Chocolate Orange. These bars are Fair Trade Certified for the chocolate and coffee and so delicious! So far, my favorite is Chocolate. It tastes real, indulgent, and healthy! There are no added sugars and the ingredients include cashews, almonds, dates, coco powder, walnuts, and coco mass. The coco mass is interesting because it is made from whole, natural coco beans. “Rich in minerals such as magnesium and iron, cocoa mass also contains a natural compound called phenylethylamine, known to promote happiness and relaxation.” No wonder, I feel so good after I eat one!
How do you promote your products?
Currently, we are going to about 400 events per year. We have regional representatives who market our products in their chosen region of the country. Since, any market is our target market, we try to attend as many different kinds of events as possible. We will do running events such as marathons and a few cycling events such as the Sea Otter Classic. In addition, since our products are also gluten free, dairy free, and sugar free, we also attend expos for specific dietary needs.
Where can I buy a Larabar?
Right now, you can purchase these bars online on our website, Larabar. If you live in the Denver area, our products are located in Whole Foods and Vitamin Cottage. Trader Joes, 7′eleven, Target, and Costco all carry Larabars as well.

I am so excited to learn about this alternate bar. I am a bit tired of my current bar of choice and the process that goes into making Larabars sounds excellent. I am also so happy to hear they are sugarfree and contain fruits and nuts 2 of my favorite things in the world. Gracias Raquel for the informative blog.

These look delicious…and I love how “natural” they are! I’ve passed these bars in stores, but I’ve never tried them. I definitely will buy one or two next time I see them.

I’m so glad I discovered your blog! It would be great to try a bar that is a healthier alternative to some of the others I’m guilty of eating “on the go”.
