I am! I have been known to eat two bars per day. One in the morning and one in the afternoon. I’ve found them to be really tasty. Almost like a candy bar…could easily eat two in one sitting….BAD, BAD, BAD, Rachel. My favorites have always been the Power Bar Triple Threat or the Zone bar in Chocolate Mint. Why is this so BAD???
1. It’s disguised as “healthy food”. A health food bar is not food! Bright colored packages that look like candy bars, taste like candy bars…might as well be a candy bar.
2. Most bars have a minimum of 220 calories and usually more like 300++. A meal replacement or a light snack, add a glass of milk and you’ve got almost 500 calories!
3. HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, FRUCTOSE, CORN SYRUP are bad for you.
4. They are expensive! What is the cost of an apple versus a bar?
5. Evaporated Cane Juice is a “techy” way of saying sugar added.
Check out this article by Al Lyman.
“In the most general of terms, complex carbs have lower glycemic indexes, and as such they tend to be absorbed gradually and will provide a more sustained and constant feeling of energy. Simple sugars are assimilated rapidly, providing a burst of energy that is often followed by feelings of lethargy. Additionally, simple sugars can cause gastric distress if taken during intense exercise. This is very important, as many energy bars contain simple sugars such as fructose, dextrose, maltose, and sucrose. What you really want and need in an energy bar is complex carbohydrate, NOT simple, cheap, sugars!”
Bottom Line- Avoid those with simple sugars, such as fructose, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup.
Hammer Nutrition has ENORMOUS amounts of free knowledge on this subject as well as many others. You can read it here.
SO NOW WHAT?
You’re hungry, it’s two hours before lunch, what should you eat?
How about an apple and cottage cheese, apple and peanut butter or yogurt, small serving of mixed nuts, a salad? The list goes on and on…Graeme Street recommends the Hammer Nutrition bar, although, as yet, I haven’t tried it yet.
Readers, suggestions of healthy nutritious bars?

The data about harmful effects of fructose and as always moderation is the key.
