Try a spin class!

November 1st, 2007 · 1 Comment

For those of you who think you’re getting a workout by riding that elliptical for thirty minutes or the treadmill or the stairmaster- I would like you to reconsider your workout options and TRY A SPIN CLASS!!

Moderate Speed, Treadmill, 30 minutes yields approximately 130 calories

Pilates, 1 hour, yields approximately 227 calories

Step Aerobics, 1 hour, step is 6-8 inches, yields approximately 551 calories

Spin Class, 1 hour, very vigorous activity yields approximately 811 calories

Those calculations are strictly a guide! I used a calorie counter online but I never fully trust those things- only you know how hard you are working. My heart rate monitor at the end of a spin class usually has a calorie counter of 740 calories burned. I keep my heart rate between 170-182 (sprint)- this is high even for me. On a run my heart rate is usually between 160-170. Spin classes are great because you can get a really HIGH intensity workout.

Lots of spin classes use heart rate to turn up the intensity and increase the fat burn. At my gym you can borrow a sweaty, smelly strap to get your heart rate. This sports bra is a MUCH BETTER idea! http://www.numetrex.com It has heart rate sensors built in. You don’t have to wear a chest strap to monitor your heart.
